@egelmairphotography, just shoot me an email to info@tnr-tape.com and I can send you two sample numbers and tape. Would love to see if they work with your skinsuit. Like you I also cringe every time I see pins getting pushed through expensive clothing!
To follow up on the Velotec Pro skinsuit. Aaron was great and sent me a test kit to try it out to see if it would work or not. Thanks for such a fast response!
I tried it out this morning with really good results. I put the tape on the four corners of the test number and it sit for about an hour before I put it on the suit. It was about another 45 min before I actually got out the door. I then did a 45 min recovery ride on the TT bike. When I got back, everything was stuck where it should have been. Nothing came up and when I took the number off, I really had to peel it to get it off. The only downside was a little bit of adhesive residue was left on the suit, but nothing major and not any more than I’ve seen with 3M 77.
I will say that it was much more user friendly than the VHB tape and I will be buying some more, especially for TTs.
I shot a quick video which highlights some of the differences between the VHB 4905 and TNR Tape. Check the link below for the video, skip to 5:01 if you want to see the peel test. In my opinion the VHB as too low of adhesion value, on a test fabric we got around 600g of peel force after ~1min of application. In comparison to TNR Tape which had initial peel at around 1200g and much higher right before release(~1400g). Even with how sticky our adhesive is we still have some issues sticking to kits, so I think with VHB you could loose your number. The other option is to use a bunch more material, but that means more $$$.
After more than a couple of dozen uses, I finally have a situation where the 2 inch wide VHB tape left a little bit of residue on the jersey. But I could remove the residue by using my fingers. It was on a custom Cutaway jersey (very thin and summery fabric). I’m thinking that the jersey material may make a difference. But so far, never had the number fall off for short cx races. I usually have two strips of tape which are as long as the bib.
I wonder if the technique of removal - peeling it off the jersey while wearing the jersey in a car seat - increases the chance of the adhesive residue remaining on the jersey. Maybe better to peel the bib somewhat perpendicularly off the jersey.
@Adam long term yes. In the immediate short term we don’t have the margins to really make it work right now but something we are working over the next 6 months to enable some Europe and UK based distributors.
Thanks for the reply @Aaron_Collins. If you want to stock in a small independent bike shop in the UK just drop me a line ![]()
I got a set of bibboards at a running expo and have used them since for running races. They work fine for that. I also tried them on my jersey for a CX race and they did not work well for that. Under tension of trying to get the number snug; they just popped off. They did work well on the running tech shirts because there they are just hanging - kinda draped and no tension.
Some years ago there was a tape product, Race Tape maybe? As of that time, USAC still requred pins - so I don’t think it went very far.
I’ve been hearing about TNR tape; but haven’t seen it yet, will have to give it a try.
@Aaron_Collins, any update on using TNR tape on Velotec skin suits? It’s been a few months since you had people testing, but I notice the website still cautions against using them on that material.
@jgarner, Great question. something I have been debating about updating. So I have four people that have tested it on the Velotech suit, here is the results. I think there is a specific year range that is the problem, but I am not sure how Velotech does their fabrics. The suits now look the same as the 2018 and 2017 so I am not sure if its built using different fabrics. Typically it the fancy “coated aero” fabrics that are giving us problems as nothing will stick to it. Same issue with the Rapha Speedsuits on the just the back panel. Not sure how I can fix that as whatever adhesive would work there would never come off of other fabrics ![]()
- Dec 2018 purchase, used in competition good adhesion. Residue after 5.5hrs of application(indicates good bond). Has used multiple times with no adhesion issues
- Unknown age suit, low adhesion level, also reports low adhesion with Super 77
- 2018 Purchase(exact month not given). Test at home on trainer, high level of adhesion
- Winter of 2017 receipt of suit, low adhesion, lost number in competition. Repeat test at home shows low adhesion.
@jgarner also if you have a Velotech suit and want to test it out shoot me an email to info@tnr-tape.com and I can get some samples mailed out.
@Aaron_Collins, I actually ordered some for non-TT races, so I might try them on the Velotec suit as well as my non-Velotec kit. I’ll let you know.
@jgarner that sounds awesome. If you need a few test numbers or some extra adhesive for that Velotec just let me know. I would have included it with your order but it already went out and I didn’t put 2 and 2 together ![]()
Our local crit series mandates that numbers are always on the left, and they use cloth numbers.
I just took my number and kit to the local seamstress, and had it stitched into the panel.
$10, and I don’t have to mess about with pins, glue, or tape for the season.
@Aaron_Collins Rob from Australia I am keen after reading this thread and looking at the site to use the tape. I have VeloTec jerseys and a SS . I hate pins. Putting holes in my jersey or SS. And want an alternative!
@robcumine totally hear and will be flushing out some Australia distributorship hopefully soon. Reach out to me in a month or so if you don’t see anything. You can email me at info@tnr-tape.com
Anyone know what Ineos are using? There’s a video from KBK where Moscon, after getting disqualified, is seen to just pull his numbers off (and throwing them on the ground). They didn’t seem to be pinned or glued with tape. Maybe those magnets?
What’s the issue with safety pins? I’ve never had a problem with them
It looked like a pocket of some sort. Maybe a nopinz pocket?
WT numbers are like a sticker.
