One of my riding buddies uses magnets to affix the number. He races quite often and hasn’t had a problem with them.
I used TNR tape for my last two races. Both with cloth numbers. I really like the product, but you do have to remember to remove the number from your jersey after the race to prevent residue from adhering to your jersey. I learned that the hard way the first time. The second time I removed my number after a 4 hour road race and the number came right off without any sticky residue. The number also adhered to my jersey in a rainy mess of a race. I was impressed. (note: the jersey has to be dry when applying the adhesive for it to stick).
Glad to hear it had worked so well for you, especially in that rainy race! As you found its very important to take off the number right away after the race, otherwise the adhesive continues to get stickier and stickier.
One trick if you happen to forget to take it off, is to toss the whole jersey in the freezer, let it sit in there and get nice and cold, and then peel the number off, it will help prevent the adhesive transfer you saw. One other suggestion that I haven’t had a chance to try yet, is that if you leave the number on for a long time(like one week plus) is to just spray the inside of the jersey with GooGone where the adhesive is and it should release nicely(i.e. basically spray the adhesive through the jersey material, if that makes sense).
Anyways if you or anyone ever has any issues or questions don’t hesitate to contact me at info@tnr-tape.com
I was ready to give your tape a try until I got to the part about not working with the Velotec skinsuit that I just bought. Any updates or insights as to why it doesn’t work?
Is it a complete no-go or just doesn’t stick the best? If I could even reduce the number of pins in the skinsuit I would count it as a win. I used the vhb tape last weekend and it worked well with just 4 pins in the corners for peace of mind, but the tape is a little bit of a pain to get the backing off.
anyone try these https://bibboards.com/?
So right now we are playing it very conservative. I had a report from one of our testers that they had poor adhesion to specifically Velotech Aero Speedsuit, so until I can get my hands one to to confirm how much lower it is I have just added to the warning list. I have emailed them a few times to see if I could get some fabric samples to do some testing on but have never heard a response.
Yes you can combine pins with TNR Tape, and that will help alot to reduce the impact of pins on tearing it. If you are interested in giving it a test on your skinsuit shoot me an email to info@tnr-tape.com and I can send a sample number and a 2 Race Trial pack to you. Would love to see if your suit performs differently.
Thanks for the suggestion… I ordered a package of the tape and finally got a chance to give it a shot last night (with the cloth bib) and it worked flawlessly. I removed the bib/tap about three hours after the race and no residue left on either the jersey or bib.
It works - would highly recommend.
I have used Bibboards for the fall CX season and now 8 races into the spring and I am a huge fan. I really haven’t had too much trouble getting them aligned so my number sits flat (same as using pins). I do however keep some extra pins in the car for the leading edge to ensure that sits flat against my side.
The TNR-Tape saved my butt this weekend. The weather conditions were miserable this weekend at the Woodstock road race. Most of the other women wore jerseys because they didn’t want to put holes in their jackets. I had never tried the tape on my jacket so I decided to give it a shot. The tape stuck well. I did have to use the freezer trick for remove the tape, but it did come off without any residue sticking to my waterproof jacket. I was impressed. For some reason it didn’t work as well to my Rapha speedsuit that I used for the circuit race the day prior. The sticky came undone and I made the race officials had to struggle with the camera to identify my number. It might have been user error because it worked okay for the time trial earlier in the day ![]()
Awesome to hear it worked so well on the rain jacket. You had me nervous as we have only very limited testing with rain jackets and real world rain races, but good call on the freezer trick to get the adhesive to come of easily. Its my go to technique for those applications where you have to much adhesion. Goo Gone would have also probably worked okay, but some of those fancy waterproof jackets make me scared.
So to follow up on the Rapha speedsuit, if I understand you had used TNR Tape in the TT earlier in the day, then came back for a circuit race and had a corner pop loose? Was it the same number that you had applied or a different number? Was the corner that came loose at your shoulder blade area(assuming you applied it on one side of your body and not in the middle)? To keep it quick, it can be a combination of a few things. We have seen that kits that you get really sweaty in, dry but don’t wash, can have much lower adhesion than a fresh kit. I suspect that skin oils begin to sit on the outside of the fabric, it makes it harder for the adhesive to stick. We also are sensitive to moisture(i.e. a damp kit) during the application and with lycra it can be very hard to tell how “wet” it really is. You can overcome these limitations but really taking the time to work the number into the jersey, the harder you press the better the adhesion you will get. The hardest place for a solo user to get rubbed in is the shoulder blade as its super hard to reach, so just try to rub it in as much as you reasonably can. I also recommend if the number a good test pull before the start of the race, it can help find the situations in which you missed a spot. If your kit is too wet, there is nothing you can do at that point but use safety pins, this is a place we are looking to really improve on the next version.
One follow up question too, are you using the Version 1.1 or our V1.0?
Anyways thanks for taking the time to write about your experience and sorry that you ended up with a flappy number for one of these races. Please keep me posted if you keep seeing issues with that speedsuit. We have found a couple materials, like the Velotech Speedsuit, where our adhesive just will not stick to it. I am not sure exactly why, but some of these fabrics are getting super fancy and I think they are putting hydrophobic coatings in them which will make it tough to stick. We are doing our best to compile that list so people that have certain kits can avoid it. Anyways feel free to email me at info@tnr-tape.com if you have any issues, we love feedback and it often leads to more free tape ![]()
Wow did I fail at keeping it short!
I have two speed suits. Both were brand new, but interestingly they are two different generations (one is this year model and the other is last years model). I used the same numbers (paper) for the three races and made sure to cover the adhesive with the tape backing that I saved during the application process after the race to keep the sticky clean. I reapplied fresh tape over the old sticky and let it sit for about 2 hours before applying the number to my second speed suit (was dry and clean). The numbers were placed on both sides of the back. The sticky popped off both sides at the shoulder blades. People said that I looked like an angel with wings riding. I have definitely been called worse things before
I don’t think that I worked the tape in well enough. It is hard to do by myself with a skin suit. For whatever reason, it stuck better to this seasons Rapha speed suit compared to last year. However, it might also have to do with the fact that I had to move around more on the bike in the circuit race compared to the TT. I am using the version 1.1 tape.
Hmm yeah that is a hard one. Given that it was both the shoulder blades I might also agree that it was just how it got rubbed in, or it might be the on bike position stretched the jersey more than when it was applied as by yourself that is tough to get those shoulder spots set pefectly.
I never like to “blame” the customer, I view every failure as our own fault. Meaning we didn’t do a good enough of job informing the users about application. So please keep me posted on how it works out, and if you have any questions, issues or just want to give an update shoot me an email at info@tnr-tape.com
For what it’s worth, it does work well with super 77. I got the same suit and-man-you do not want to pin that thing the holes get huge!
For what it’s worth, I would love to test this on the velotec suit if you need more testers. ![]()
Yeah for sure! Just shoot me your contact info and shipping address to info@tnr-tape.com and I can mail you out a sample and a test number.
@Aaron_Collins Just want to chime in say I appreciate the info and very non sales-y / forum friendly approach. If I hadn’t just bought a big thing of gorilla glue spray I’d go out and pick your product up today! If I can come up with another use for that bottle maybe It’ll expedite my purchase…
@Scollett84 no problem at all. We just follow the golden rule, and I hate when companies spam forums so I don’t want to be “that” company. Is the Gorilla Spray Glue like Super 77? SDD makes it look like a solvent based Styrene-butadiene spray but have never used it.
I’m curious about the race dots too!
I have a teammate that used them for a bit and absolutely hates them - a cost effective alternative to their prices is getting small earth magnets on amazon. $10 for like 40 or something…
I actually would be very interested, too. Got 2 suits from Velotec and using pins almost makes me cry ![]()
