Phone wallet options for wet protection

Oh…

I tried a case with a stitched in plastic cover (Manhattan Portage) and HATED IT! And it tore a bit. I ran into problems getting the touch screen to work consistently (plus sweat somehow got under it), and ended up just ignoring the iPhone and stuffed a bunch of other chad into that space. I did VIP for 5Boros for that. shrug

I probably have quite a collection of ‘cycling wallets’ and ‘phone/phone carriers’. I thought that the Ziploc was primo, but there are better choices out there, but finding some that worked with the overgrown OtterBox Defender was ‘difficult’.

But good luck to y’all. I believe that there IS something out there that will do what you want, and you (not YOU in particular) may eventually find it. :sunglasses:

Rapha essentials cases work great, the waterproof zipper is easy to use to take out phone for photos while riding and has kept my phone dry in torrential downpours. Plus it has a zippered interior pocket for a credit card, cash, house key and spare CR2032 battery

Phones have been waterproof for quite a few years now, you’re likely bagging it for no reason.

Did you have the large or the regular version of the Rapha bag? If the larger would it fit the larger (Max) iPhone?

+1 for the Rapha case but get the large. Phone, emergency cash in case of lift, keys and a spare set of contact lenses. Keeps everything dry and I haven’t had any heat issues running it in the Aussie summers

Does the large fit easily into a jersey pocket?

Assuming a normal sized 3-pocket jersey, yes.

Some of the smaller 2-pocket women’s jerseys, or small-pocket aero kit, maybe not?

All the newer iPhones are waterproof, but that doesn’t solve your heat problem…

You are not supposed to pay the list price for the bike stuff. Even the Rapha cases can be found in the archive sale quite frequently.

The large rapha case (iPhone 14 inside) fits in all my jersey pockets, it sticks out of the top on some of the shallower pockets but the case is not slippery and stays in even in an aero tuck

The iPhones are definitely NOT ‘waterproof’, but are water ‘resistant’. That distinction hides a lot of room for Apple to deny requests to replace a dead device and also an admission that nothing can be truly waterproof consistently over its life.

Apple even states that the Apple Watch is not ‘waterproof’, and implies rather directly that the exposure to water can lessen any water ‘resistance’ potential over time. TAG Heuer does not recommend showering with their watches, and Apple doesn’t enthusiastically stand behind doing that either.

The iphones are more waterproof than the rider carrying them: iphone specs say it should survive 30 mins under water. We have also seen many stories where an iphone has spent significantly longer time at the bottom of a lake etc. and works fine after someone has picked it up. With the Apple Watch it depends on the model: with the ultra you can even go scuba diving.

This is helpful. I had my phone fall out of a shallower pocket 20miles from home, which made for an awfully stressful Thanksgiving morning.

I just have an iPhone 12 Pro, so do you think I could fit the phone, multi-tool, tire plug kit, and car key fob in the Rapha case? That would be the ideal I think.

Get the large…

You could probably fit all that but it will be a bit chunky

What a silly thing to say! “The iphones are more waterproof than the rider carrying them”?

The iPhones have ‘moisture sensors’ inside, and if a large number of them are triggered, Apple can hand it back to you and deny coverage. The iPhone is not meant to be placed in water, it is not sealed, especially if there is anything in the water that might help it get by any seals. Plus if it does fail, everything on it that isn’t backed up, or shared on iCloud is gone, permanently. But I’ve fallen in water with my iPhone, and getting out quickly is important, and drying it off as quickly as possible. Sweat can kill a phone. The case I mentioned above has kept my iPhone dry and protected, The Rapha one is far more form fitting, limiting the choices for cases and what else you can stuff in it.

But the other question on phone wallets is will it save my device if it falls out of my jersey pocket onto concrete on a descent at 30mph? Hmm… (Use a case? Which can also limit wallet options. sigh)

What I do is put the flat stuff in the wallet, and since I have a really clunky (to me) fob, I just jam my keychain in another pocket and use a pair of thin fabric gloves (Milwaukee brand, but there are plenty of others) to keep them in the pocket. The leather/cordura mix of the wallet I have helps keep it in the pocket. Remember, you can carry to much stuff… Like the Silca tool thing that I carry. With 2 tubes, their all-in-one tool set, and some nitrile gloves, it’s a damned chunky thing to have back there, but I feel it keeps the flat curse at bay, I hope… (Silca doesn’t sell the one I have anymore. Probably because it’s so ‘fat’?)

This was the reason I switched from a ziplock bag to a case. I had a collision where I was ejected from my bike and at the same time my iphone slipped from my jersey pocket. I flew only some meters, but my iphone did at least double the distance before landing on the tarmac. Inside the plastic bag the phone had also a light protective case, but that did not protect it enough. I still think that my current bag and the light case would protect the phone in most situations.

Other than the waterfield wallet, what are folks using who have the larger Max iPhones? Would love to have more protection than the ziploc ive been using. I also wish the Jeep key fobs weren’t so dang big!
