Peloton's blockbuster IPO (NASDAQ: PTON): What impact, if any, do you see it having on TrainerRoad?

You might need to reread my post bc “everyone here” is in reference to TR users. The point I was trying to make – I was contrasting TR users and spinners.

Yes, I’m reinforcing the point you made by saying the same thing but saying it first. :+1:

Ah…so it was just a dig at “home spin people” as being “weird”.

Got it. Thanks for clarifying. See Pbase’s post above then.

Agreed. I focused on “there is very little overlap between Peloton users and cyclists”. [To me] It is a very different statement than: "the overwhelming majority . . . "

They seem entirely consistent to me…an overwhelming majority would mean there is “very little overlap”.

YMMV.

A) Power13 agrees with me that they don’t identify as cyclists and then points me to your post where it’s a bad thing to say one way of cycling is more than the other.

B) I don’t think spinners want to be cyclists. I think they have gone out of their way to not be confused with the weirdos who wear spandex and helmets and get in the way on the road, etc.

C) I don’t mean to pass a value judgment (I did say weird but in this post, you’ll see I call us the weirdos via the spinners’ perspective.

D) It’s more a matter of just not understanding how anyone could get hooked without enjoying the benefits of riding an actual bicycle. Is this a moral failing on my part? Okay. shrug.

Yep. Go hang out on the Peloton Facebook page for a while and this is abundantly clear.

Power Zone based workouts and FTP lingo are becoming more common however.

Just announced today. I am whelmed

It’s a smart move. Remember how many people bought Billy Blanks videos? It was huge.

…so I could just play this instead of paying for Peloton?

Feature request: Chad does this for a video sponsored by TR

The problem is that Peloton is built on purchasing hardware first. Producing content without associated hardware sales will not help grow the business, IMO.

Like this. I’m surprised Peloton hasn’t tried copying this.

I have never seen it like that. Peloton is about the content and making exercise fun. Loads of people only pay for the app, not the bike or treadmill.

Yes, you are correct…my comment was in regards to what is generating the revenue. I didn’t make that point very well.

I do think Peloton could really push to be like a “one stop shop” for all things exercise and fitness.

It is a really interesting company

I don’t think it’s their goal, but you somewhat infer that from their added strength, yoga, stretching, etc. classes. Those added apps may not be sufficient on their own to bring in new customers, but they are certainly helpful in keeping current bike customers engaged [if customer loyalty #s are an indication].

EXACTLY!

I know I’m flogging a dead horse here, but if you think a majority of people want to take a Peloton class in a virtual world or that Peloton subscribers won’t take a yoga, strength, or boxing class, you really don’t understand why Peloton is as huge as it is.

Will continued expansion of in app classes increase subscribers? I don’t know. Will it make existing users even more sticky. 100%

John Foley (PTON CEO) and Jill Woodworth (CFO) will be under a lot of pressure to answer some tough questions about their business during the investor Q&A portion of next week’s earnings call. Historically, during the high growth period, they have been able to get away deflecting such questions. Probably not so much now.

I’ve never understood why the Peloton app is $13/mo. if you bring your own hardware but $40/mo if you bought their expensive hardware.

My wife has been a Peloton subscriber for 5 years now and I recently asked her this very question (not for her consideration, but just curiously). She described 2 reasons:

  1. Your results don’t appear in the app, just your workout (imagine doing a TR workout and not see how you are doing; you’d need a separate bike computer for that)
  2. Leaderboard: You would not see yourself on the leaderboard to see how you are doing relative to others taking the class or who have taken it before.

I see. They obviously need a connected bike with a power meter to get on the leaderboard. It seems like an expensive feature though.
