Milan - San Remo 2021 Thread (Spoilers at some point)

I thought that. They seemingly burned all their matches keeping the pace high to discourage attacks and get Pidcock into that final group, but Pidcock isn’t a sprinter and was never likely to have a chance in that kind of finish against a group with that much quality (still love that he gave it a go on the descent anyway!). In the absence of them having an out and out sprinter to match up against the likes of MVDP, Ewan, WVA, Sagan, etc, they either needed Pidcock to attack on the Poggio and get into that finish with a much more select bunch. Or they needed to get Ganna into that final group instead of burning him up on the Poggio, he has the engine and aero to pull off a long range attack similar to Stuyvens.

It’s not like Ineos were favourites and blew the race, just odd to see them doing so much work on the front in the last 40km to set up a finish which favoured other teams more than their own. I guess maybe they thought they could make the pace so severe that it would eliminate guys like Ewan, and put Pidcock over the top with a bunch of more like ~5 guys instead of ~17 or whatever it was in the end :man_shrugging:
