If it wasn’t a race I would be wearing a long sleeve jersey that I wear for temps from 30-50
I’ll most likely be thermal pants or bib knickers, long finger thin gloves, long sleeve jersey and a wind breaker vest, toe covers and just a helmet and sunglasses
So looks like a bit of “life” has entered my plans……but it is all good.
Decided on a whim that I am going with my middle daughter to see The Black Crowes on Friday night, so will drive out early Sat for the race…and then from there driving to Columbus with my oldest daughter on Sunday to see Springsteen.
So results in B-R are now of secondary concern….just looking forward to a fun weekend of music and riding my bike!! ![]()
Bring your bike, south of Columbus is amazing riding
The bike is definitely along for the trip! Will check it out….thanks for the tip.
If you want gravel you’ll probably have to go North, however. You can find out exactly why @ABG hates Ohio gravel, lol.
But people say Ohio is flat….
Haha. Something like that. This was my weekend 2 weeks back:

The shorter route on Sunday was pre-riding Black Fork course in case there’s anyone in this thread signed up for it. Nothing surprising from last time I rode it. Some soft sections that were definitely underwater at some point. One of the roads was really torn up but was being actively re-graded and I assume re-graveled. Probably will be settled in by race day.
Welp…life got in the way and I need to pull the plug on Barry.
Last minute business trip next week Tues - Weds…but combined with the race and seeing Springsteen on Sunday night, I was basically going to be gone from tonight until Weds. And then I have another business trip from Fri - Tues next week. It was just too much and something had to give.
And the weather forecast wasn’t making the race any more appealing… ![]()
Good luck to all those racing…
Good luck to all those heading to Hastings, MI today … I wish I was there ![]()
Take some inspiration from the experience of me and @MI-XC last year and keep your rubber on the dirt … hopefully no crash stories this year. That gravel cuts deep. ![]()
My amateur tips for Barry success (that have had inconsistent results over the years, so take them with many, many grains of salt):
-
Empty your tank getting up the 3 Sisters. If you’re not within spitting distance of the front at that point it’s almost impossible to ride yourself back to the lead group.
-
Whatever big/small group you find yourself in during the approach to Sager Rd., try to be the first rider into the woods. 80% of the time it’s not the sand that gets you, it’s the riders in front of you tipping over like drunk ducks. Stay to the left. No, no … even further to the left than that. Also, sometimes the sand gets you

-
Don’t let the bagpipers at the top of The Wall psych you out. It’s all downhill from there🤘
Go get it, gang!
Sorry to hear, BUT, I don’t suppose you have a prime parking spot now available for me
.
Sorry…sent it to my buddy who is still racing. ![]()
Let us know how the race goes!!
In the car on the way to Hastings
Good Luck to everyone at Barry Roubaix today.
Hasting ride report.
It’s cold
Course is fast
Headwind first 20miles
BRX riders …. those 36 mile times look FAST ![]()
Can’t wait to hear about it …
Not fun at Barry.
People way beyond there skill ruined it and crashed all over the rideable sand sections. After I got stuck behind a few crashes I was just trying to stay safe. Guess I ended up 5th in my age group. I don’t care to get a podium photo, ohh well
Friend broke collar bone.
Sorry to hear that……and one of the reasons I have always avoided the race. Makes me feel a bit better about my decision to skip it this year.
Nice job on 5th, though……tough to do that after getting caught behind crashes like that.
Congrats on the nice ride … sorry to hear about the chaos. I’m not a big fan of this new format with self-selected waves they’ve had since ‘22. Seems like more and more crashes.
However, if the “sand” you’re talking about is Sager Rd., I mean … Sager is just really hard to ride the whole way and you need a little luck.
Which distance did you do?
Sounds like my race last year. I kept getting caught up in crash after crash in the dust clouds and the sand roads. So many people who self selected themselves in wave 1 who had no business being there. Not sad at all about skipping it this year. So many good races out there, I think I am done with the “mega-races.” Or I will at least adjust my attitude to treat them as a fun event, and not a race for a result.
