Lance Armstrong interview with Peter Attia

We know that Armstrong had connections. We know that the UCI made a previous positive test go away or he got an after the fact TUE or something.

Like in all pro sports, the organizations don’t want athletes to get caught. How many big cases have we heard about in pro cycling lately? None. It’s usually some small pro conti team that gets caught for blatent use of EPO these days.

Yet, the athletes are climbing mountains faster than ever. Paris Roubaix was the fastest ever. It seems like every race is the fastest ever these days. Nobody in cycling wants Rog, Pog, MVDP, WVA, or anyone else to test positive. Golf, tennis, track and field, NBA, NFL, baseball - all the same.

But…but…they train different now…and they have different diets…and…and…

Has it, though? Has it really?

Given that human achievement is progressing in every sport I’m aware of, you either believe ALL athletes worldwide are doping, or you need to recognize that we actually do know more about nutrition, training, and technique than we did 10, 20, 40, 100 years ago.

Yes.

(Hundreds of children in Uvalde receive free bikes on Saturday | kvue.com)

I’m not gonna defend -7 by any stretch, but I can attest to at least two people who benefitted directly from the resources provided by Livestrong, one of which also received a direct call from him (this was in late '98, pre-TdF days).

A lot of people criticized Livestrong for not contributing to research, etc. but that was, IIRC, always secondary to giving people information and resources to fight cancer.

Yep. And the athletes 10, 20, 50 years ago knew more about nutrition, training, and technique than they did 10, 20, 40, 100 years before that, but they still cheated to get ahead.

That is some cynicism! Fair to assume you’re a Hobbesian?

You’re making the same arguments people made to defend Lance before he came out

What sports are you talking about? In track and field, it has been shown that they are breaking records because of faster track surfaces and faster shoes (aka super shoes).

But every sport dopes just like cycling. We can see the other sports caught in the Puerto and Aderlass scandals. And many sports barely test or have less strict testing or don’t report first offenses or slaps on the wrist.

If you really believe that, why bother coming to a forum dedicated to training? Why not just head for black market pharma sites?

I don’t even know why you would say that.

My enjoyment of training and cycling has nothing to do with what pros do. I’d imagine that most people on this forum feel the same way.

And even if you dope, you still have to train.

There is doping in Esports… Esports.

Is it really surprising that there would be people doping in nearly every other or possibly every other from of competition, especially physical ones?

One can acknowledge that there is doping in sports and they themselves still wish to participate. Especially since the majority are not actually competing and just (in this case) riding for enjoyment or health.

WADA does prohibit alcohol in competition so…

Do they really? What about the Champs Elysees?

Looked again, apparently it isn’t all sports:

Air Sports (FAI) • Automobile (FIA)
• Archery (WA) • Powerboating (UIM)

I’m amused that is banned in archery but not potentially other shooting sports.

So I guess play on with the beer pong.

EDIT: Looking further, because who needs to get work done, USADA actually dropped it and said it is up to the leagues/federations. Possibly WADA did too not sure on the date on the list I had found.

I play better between the 2nd and 3rd beer, so perhaps it is doping!

Any updates on the possible e-bike doping scandal? I only made it 2 minutes into the Attia interview. Is the consensus 'if the motor don’t fit, you must acquit" still holding forum opinion? Was it possible with 2 cone gears to fit into bikes of 20 years ago? Did NASA collude with team US Postal? Why do modern e-bikes have such big tubes? Did LA have a time machine like Back to the Future and thats why he invested $100K in Uber, and made millions? If some of those questions are answered I’ll maybe listen to the rest of the interval. Come on, we are only at 169 posts!

Not to add fuel to the fire, but Lance indeed had connections. Here is him riding with US President George W. Bush Jr in 2005

He made 125 million through fraud, lies and perjury. He destroyed people that were telling the truth. He ruined for many years the only American TDF winner.

Never will be enough.

A start would be making whole all those people that he destroyed and ran through the mud. Maybe drop 10-20 million doing the right thing. Would still leave him with about 35 million left.

Yes he did good with investments. Realize the money he invested was gained through fraud.
