The cycling scene in philly was probably my favorite part of living there! one of my favorite sunday morning rides was leaving the city, head along the Schuylkill river through Manayunk. There was an awesome bakery about 15-20 miles out for a great breakfast/coffee stop and back to the city
I raced at Temple, but all the colleges have cycling teams so that was super easy to meet people to ride with. I really need to make a pilgrimage back up there now that im seeing this thread!
Agree with the above about “Wiss” and also the MASS (aka Mid-Atlantic Super Series).
Not too far though - come down to Delaware/Maryland just over the PA line for MTX’ing. Check out Brandywine, White Clay Creek, and Fair Hill.

Sorry for reviving this post, but hopefully I’ll get some good feedback by both longtime city-dwellers as those who recently moved to Philly.
I’m currently living in West Chester, but I will be moving to Philly starting September 1st. I’m looking at neighborhoods, and so far number one on the list would be Manayunk (easy commute to the west, easy way out of the city, hills), with Fairmount (too expensive?) and West Philly (not sure about this one) coming after. I mostly do road, though I don’t exclude transitioning to gravel in the near future. I’d love to hear your feedback!
Manayunk would put you in the best location for riding. Take the river trail west out to Oaks or turn off onto the Chester valley trail to Exton if you want to stay off the roads.
Take the trail east down to the art museum where numerous group road rides start all week. Or the Drives race pace ride on Thursdays (I think). Not too far to the great valley practice crit. Might need to drive there.
Cross over the river from Manayunk into Gladwyn for some great hill riding with light traffic.
For mountain biking you would be close to the Wiss and not far from the Belmont plateau where there is a long running Thursday night mock race.
Thank you! The more I read, the more I get the idea that Manayunk should likely be place to be for me, considering cycling / commute / neighborhood life / public transportation to the city center.
