I remember very clearly, early in my career, blowing a corner and ending up in a hay bale…
He also should be relegated. Any instance of line blocking in the last 500M should be treated the same. As someone else said, the leader gets to pick their line, and the man behind must come around. But we cannot allow blocking.
Behavior will not change without consistent enforcement. The trend of relegation only in the event of a crash needs to stop. I fear that the UCI will skirt this issue, leaving the dirty work of enforcement to individual race organizers and commissars.
Crazy crash. Anybody else notice what looks like additional barriers sitting there right at the finish off the side which I think is what he hits his head on? I think that oversight of careless setup and removing the extra barriers helped make it a much worse situation.
I can’t imagine crashing like that. I pray he is making progress.
I just saw the phone video from a spectator or somebody on the barrier at the point of impact. Hard to even comprehend going down with that much force. Let alone head first into solid objects. I am shook after seeing that new angle, I hope Fabio is able to recover fully.
I just watched it again. The camera guy got crushed too with a foot/heel to the face. Anyone have word on how he is doing? I imagine he had several facial fractures?!
Fabio Jakobsen is conscious and follows orders. He is breathing by himself. He was disconnected from the ventilator. We are pleased. Now he is facing rehabilitation and returning home -Paweł Gruenpeter told reporters.
Due to the injury, the cyclist had a tracheostomy, so he cannot speak. This is the opening in the trachea that is caused by the procedure. Through the tracheostomy, a trachoestomy tube is inserted into the trachea, which allows you to breathe freely, bypassing the upper airways. But now it is breathing on its own.
Doctors also denied the information that there was an hour-long resuscitation immediately after the accident. The athlete was circulating efficiently all the time.
I understand that they aren’t really designed as crash barriers for the riders. Looking at the design they look more like crowd control than anything else.
The problem with the shot I posted is that it’s a construction site where the crash occurred. A few frames after that see’s your man flying through the air upside down minus a helmet.
It’s lucky he collected an official before falling into the ditch were the footpath normally is.
It was a terrible move that caused the accident. The outcome was made worse by the unsafe conditions.
80 km an hour past road works without proper barriers is crazy.
