Gravel Tire Recommendations

42c for the small setting and 53c for the long setting.

I have a Giant Revolt 2022, I believe there is much more clearance in the small setting, but that’s what they recommend. The top of the line Revolt comes with 40c Maxxis Receptors

I have a ‘21 Revolt and have had no clearance issues with Gravel King SK 700x43 or WTB Byway 700x44. Here’s a pic with the 44s on the stock CXR2 rims.

Nice!!!

I see you have also done the Assioma spd conversion too.

I was running the 40mm Tufo Speedero in the rear (Thundero in the front) and just had to DNF a self supprted gravel event because it suffered a cut on the tread during a somewhat rocky descent.
I couldn’t get it sealed with a worm and the the valve of the tube I brought was too short for my Giant CXR2 wheels :person_facepalming:

I was happy with them so far and they felt really fast. But now I am looking for a new tire with very good puncture resistance. I am leaning towards the Specialized Pathfinder Pros but they are out of stock in Europe.
I remember the Podcast with Taylor Lideen who ran the 60 TPI Maxxis Ramblers with SilkShield for Unbound XL but their rolling resistance seems very high. It’s a bullet I’d probably be willing to bite, though to avoid getting stranded again.

So any recommendations for a dependable tire for 70% off road riding with occasional gnarly sections?

I’m a big fan of the Specialized Pathfinder Pro. I run 38 for my Crux to have mud clearance. These tires roll fast with a middle slick on pavement and hardpack and provide enough traction with the side knobs for any soft sections. Good puncture protection so far.

Maybe the Soecialized Tracer Pro….not quite as solid of a middle block, but still very tightly spaced knobs make it close to solid.

I never had any issue with the Goodyear Connector Ultimate on the road, but I wasn’t doing 70% road on them either.

SoCal hills - super dry sand over hard. What type of tires?

I’m heading out to LA / SD the last week in March. I plan on doing a day in the Santa Monica hills (unless someone suggests a more fun ride - thinking Santa Monica → PCH → Peddlers Fork → Nike missle site → Sullivans Canyon ) . Two years ago, i used a center-worn 38c TerraSpeed mini-knob on SD XC-bike trails and i was less than impressed with their grip going up 15%+ inclines, steep downhill braking/cornering confidence. I can handle up to 50c.

Questions: Should I just accept the lack of grip? Does going full knobs help here? Does adding more tire/less pressure help - I was probably running 40psi; I can probably get a bigger tire down to low-30s. Seems like I’ve got to bite through about 5mm of sand and most tires only have 2mm or so of knobs.

Goodyear Connector Ultimate…our main gravel trail here is exactly the same - kitty litter over hard pack. Fantastic tire for what you are describing.

But I also think it is one of the best all-around gravel tires out there, too.

Do you have a recommendation regarding tire pressure? I have the Pathfinders (in 42) on my new Diverge (still to be taken out for her maiden voyage) and info differs between the various reviews - so first-hand feedback would be highly appreciated.

It’s going to depend a little on your rims and weight, but I run Pathfinders Pro’s 42 on Enve G23’s with inserts, and have them in the low 30’s for most rides. I’m about 155lb.

I like the Rene Herse approach. Knobs or flat.

We are the same weight and I would run 42’s in the low 20’s. I run 40’s at 25 psi.

Take out some psi and just live with the extra traction and comfort.

That’s crazy talk. Those are MTB tire pressures .

Do you run inserts? I’d be concerned about rim strikes at those pressures.

Here is the website I use based on tire type, weight, internal rim width, etc.

I ran inserts at Big Sugar in my 45’s….and only 20psi.

Most of the time, I do not run inserts. Admittedly most of my gravel rides are Cat 1 gravel….hard pack with kitty litter over the top, but there are some more chunky sections and I have zero issues with my set up.

This threads super long so didnt read through all the suggestions, but I cant speak highly enough about the vittoria torreno series. Mainly using the dry version with the slick center and tiny little knobs on the side. Have a wet version as well thats more suited to light singletrack than “gravel” per se.
The vittorias are up there on my list of easiest tires to mount and setup tubeless. Easily beaded them with a floor pump

Me too. I have my Gravel-/Allroadbike setup with 44mm snoqualmie pass tires in the extra lite flavour. I read the extensive thread over on weight weenies and someone posted a spreadsheet with tested rolling resistance. The RH Snoqualmie Pass tires EL roll almost as fast as Conti 4000 25mm tires, which suited my intended use of the bike. I weigh 88kg (194 freedum units) and ride them at around 2.8 bar (40psi) 50:50 road and hardpack gravel. No loamy or muddy stuff so the slicks work for me. They are bang on 44mm on a 25id rim. The RH tires are expensive but in my limited experience worth it. I can’t speak for their knobby tires but if you want to go fast and comfortable over rough roads or hardpack gravel I’d strongly consider the RH EL tires or a stronger casing if you ride chunkier gravel as well.

It’s time to refresh my tyres on the adventure bike ready for the summer and a 320km road/gravely-cycle path ultra. In my planning, I’ve been aiming for 20kp/h average but went and did a 120km on Sunday that runs to the 1/4 (and 3/4) way through point but was doing about 18kp/h average.

I am currently running some Michelin Power Gravel 40mm tyres which after 2 years are worn smooth so time for a new set. I’ve been scouring reviews and bicyclerollingresistance and trying to work out if some new faster tyres are likely to find that extra 2kp/h (tbh an extra 1kp/h would be nice!).

I’ve narrowed it down to some Panaracer Gravelking SK 38mm or 43mm or Schwalbe G-One RS in 35mm or 40mm. The rolling resistance of the G-Ones is much lower but they are best part of £60 more for the pair and are slightly heavier. Trying to find some feedback on people who have ridden either set, or something similar that I’ve not considered. 45mm is the max tyre width for my frameset.

Leaning towards the Gravelking just due to the cost of the Schwalbes but not sure if I should go wider or narrow.

for paved and cycle path, SK’s would be overkill. I’d suggest looking at a full slick. I’ve run the GK slicks in 38, RH slicks in 38 and 44 and wouldn’t hesitate to run any of them again, and I ride far chunkier roads.

Tyres wouldn’t just be for the ultra i do take it on to light trails but I think if GKs should do easy trail stuff the money saved will cover all my nutrition for the race and that’s not to be sniffed at! Just need to decide if I want bigger or narrower. Or 38 front and 43 rear for a comfortable bottom!

Thanks for your feedback. :grinning:
