GCN Vid - Is Zone 2 still relevant in 2026

I found the video informative and realised I was trying to do too much zone 2 without enough volume and not actually staying in the zone. So for me, it’s helped me reassess my training and make some small changes.

I’ll add that I like GCN and mostly still watch their videos, especially since Dan Lloyd seems to be doing content again.

Yea, I generally like their content. I don’t use it to guide my training, but they are fun and their long content travel vids are really fantastic.

So it begs the question then… is it best to “earn” your Z2 by doing SS/threshold until you can’t, or VO2/anaerobic until you can’t?

Am I the only one who hates everything in cycling being described as “spicy”?

Lastest emirical cycling podcast talks about this Ten Minute Tips #69: The Case For Riding Easier - 28:00 - 32:30 section relevant to this discussion.

Focus on sustainable volume to drive adaptions, as there is only so much high intensity volume people can cope with, rest has to be filled with lower intensity.

So pros do lots of Z2, if you’re time crunched it shouldn’t be the focus - don’t train like the pros.

I thought @trekcentury’s comment was sarcasm.

I found this. Traditional Base 1 Mid Volume was my savior for when struggling with the heat & my motivation for intervals was obliterated. (My training is all outside.) But at least I felt I could do a lot of low intensity. I was subbing out some workouts for longer ones & averaging 12 hours per week on loading weeks. I did that block three times before getting back into intervals.

It seems the only people who claimed you should only do Zone 2 were GCN themselves

I listened to this (the case for riding easier) thinking I would finally get science based answers as to why easy riding (Z2) was beneficial. But I felt like Kylie Moore actually made the case for not riding easy unless you were over 7-10 hours a week, depending on the training an individual can absorb.

Z2 or “easy” riding is how to increase volume (10+ hours/week) while managing fatigue. For someone on the trainer during winter, doing 5x1.5-2 hour rides, there may be limited effectiveness in much z2. E+, tempo, or SS may be more effective in the limited time available, assuming of course on an individual level you are not getting fatigued and are able to deliver the higher intensity sessions.

I think what he said was, if you have limited time to ride, still do your endurance riding easy, but add another interval day. That’s very different to keeping the same ratio of hard to easy days but riding harder on your easy days as a way to increase CTL.

So your easy days are still easy - and your hard days are still hard - but you now have 3 hard days instead of 2 or 4 hard days instead of 3.

All subject to recovery, obvs.

I believe the point is that Coggan was right all along, shocking! /s

Also, he can be found stirring the pot on r/Velo if interested :slightly_smiling_face:

Agreed - their content has really improved since they became independent again, and they do some really fun videos. I’m also with you - their long-form travel videos are really great. I generally skip the “should I do X training” for the bike, but I do like that they’re now talking more about weight training.

You know, I hear people say this and I understand the reasoning. And sure, proper VO2 max intervals, for example, are nontrivial to fit into an otherwise reasonably full life for extended periods. But it definitely seems to me that, say, 15min warmup/30min Zwift race (maybe leaving a bit in the tank) or 2 x 20 circa threshold are at least as “repeatable”, in the fullest sense, as a 3hr endurance ride.

I would say they have a mix of content. Their weekly show is a bit of fun and news and is a good watch during trainer sessions. They also do epic long rides across the world and the film production is excellent. Much more like a travel vlog of fantastic places to ride. They also have GCN tech and GCN racing channel. Dan does a great job on the GCN racing channel.

They have a GCN racing league on Zwift and they are the presenters for the yearly Zwift challenge, which brings male and female amateur competitors together from across the world to compete for a 1 year pro contract. That’s always a lot of fun to watch.

Anyway, I’m not shilling for them, I just think they deliver on fun bike-centered entertainment.
