Dropping my cadence means I can complete an interval - is this bad?

I assume you are in ERG mode? What gear are you in? Have you tried moving to heavier gear, say big ring and 2nd or 3rd smallest sprocket?

In a heavier gear, flywheel spins faster. Slower flywheel forces you into lower cadence as it gives you sooner the sense of spinning out.

I know this trick in ERG mode, but only works for me if I am fresh. Many times I can only complete intervals grinding, and for me so far works.

Will try this !

If it works, then it’s better to complete the interval. I don’t think 80-85 is especially low. I’m naturally about 90-92 inside, and about 92-94 outside (but then outside rides tend to be lower intensity).

One observation, are you a bigger (as in taller and stronger, not as in fat!) guy?

I’ve noticed that (as a very general rule) the big, strong rouleurs and TTers tend to push higher gears at low cadence, while the climbers and puncheurs tend to spin a bit quicker.

184 cm and 85kg, so somewhat a bigger cyclist, but pretty random all in all
