I am looking to buy a treck checkpoint SLR, I am 5 foot 10, 32 inch inseam. The website says I’d be a 56 , but I’ve seen multiple people online say the manufacturer sizing is wrong and maybe I should consider 54, wondering if anyone has this experience
I am 6”1 with a 32” inseam and the 58 fits me very well, I’m guessing the 56 would be fine for you.
One key thing with the SLR is the seat post is a mast type and there is a limit to how low it can go. I think my inseam is less than 32 and for me I ended up with a 54. If you have a bike now that’s set to what you want take a measure between the bottom bracket and the seat rails and see if it fits within the range of the sizes you are considering, could be limiting factor.
I did test ride a 56 (non SLR) and it felt good, slightly higher stack and longer reach than the 54, the measures on my 54 SLR are very similar to my Domane SL5 from a bike fit perspective, I just get the benefit of a longer front centre, bigger tire capability and longer length overall. But my 5’11’ body has shorter legs and a longer torso.
Hope that helps.
Same
6’ tall w/ 32 inseam and also ride a 58. In most brands,/models, I can ride a 56 or 58, but would definitely lean to the larger size on a gravel bike. Better on sketchy descents and minimize any toe overlap.
At 5’11" with a 32ish inseam, I’ve had a boone and crocket each in both 56 and a 58 size. I can fit on both, but the handling is different. I prefer the 56 for racing cross for agility and the 58 for gravel events for stability and more upright riding position. There is no way I would go down to a 54 for either options.
While Boone/Crockett is slightly different then Checkpoint, they are all very similar. If buying a Checkpoint now, I would go with a 56 as it is closer to the 58 in boone/crocket. I use 99spokes.com to compare bike geometries if that helps.
I have a checkpoint. 58cm and I’m about 6’1". It is the correct size, but it does feel like a big bike. Kind of like a monster truck with the 45mm tires I have on it.
I’m 5’10 31 inch inseam and im on a 54. Your best bet will be seeing if some place has two checkpoints in stock and finding which size is best for you
I’m 6’ on a 58. 56 all the way.
I’d push you toward the SL though. The difference is only about .5 lb when you even out the parts and, if you’re traveling, the traditional seat post is easier to deal with than a seat mast in a bike bag/case. Actually, if you don’t really want the downtube box, the ALR version is every bit as good as the carbon versions, especially if you put a nice seatpost and bars on it.
I am 5ft8 and on a 52. The Checkpoint is a very slow steering bike. Upsizing will not make it any better.
5’10" with a 31.5 inseam…own a 2022 Emonda and Crockett both size 54. I’m glad I got the 54. Fit has been perfect! 110 stem on the Emonda and 100 on the Crockett. Also, I got the seat post with the taller option for the Emonda.
This thread is funny, some are sure I’m 56, others confident on 54… brutal
The only reason to size down is to SLAM THAT STEM since it’s an endurance fit. Your set would be about 25mm shorter.
The size difference between a 54 and 56 is that the 54s reach is 20mm shorter and 20mm lower. That’s easy to fix with a different stem unless you want the bars really high or low. Here, it might make sense to go with a larger frame go you can fit more stuff inside the frame triangle (two bottles and a half frame bag) and run a dropper stem.

A lot of the steering feel is the chainstay length (the wheelbase behind the crank). The taller you are, the less this matters because the saddle get closer to the pivot point. In front, you’ve got a longer stem, so the 25mm longer top tube isn’t as noticeable.
You gotta look at the particular bike too. The difference between a 52 and 54 is just that top tube is 20mm higher, the reach is only 5mm longer because the smaller sizes are compromised for toe clearance on the bigger tires - you’re basically on a short 54cm. So if you look at your bike, effectively everything behind the seat and pedals is the same as far as feel goes. In front, it’d be like running a 20mm spacer under your stem and a lightly longer stem. The sizes could be spaced out more. You’re pretty slammed and have your seat mast pretty low, so 52 is the way to go there.
I’m 6’ 0" w/ 32" inseam. I have a 2020 58cm Checkpoint SL and a 2022 56cm Checkpoint SLR. Trek changed the geo with the latest update and the new 56cm feels like the old 58cm with my fit. My fitter was even weary of the 56cm being too long of a reach, but I bought new bars that made it fit the same as the old 58cm.
First time on the internet? Everyone has an opinion and all are right
Seriously though, without digging into it, you are best to go to a shop and fit in person if at all possible. Geo chart comparison to any known bikes is the next best and general comments after that.
Upsizing generally does the opposite.
I’d venture to say you’re right between sizes. I’m 6’2” and ride a 58 boone. I remember sitting on a 56 and thinking with a 110-120 stem, that might have been the ticket, so you may be a hair stretched on a 56. Id hop on a 54 and 56 back to back and see how it feels
Hey i bought a 56 Trek Checkpoint ALR 2021, I am 5’9-10 and when i went to get a fit, the told me it could have gone both ways. I could have gotten a 54 they told me. They said its better to get a smaller bike and have to option to put a longer reach on it then being forced to with a 56. my next bike was a 54 road bike and its so much better fitting…i know gravel and road fittings arent totally apples to apples but i hope that helps
I have a Trek Checkpoint SL in 56 cm, and it fits well to me at 179 cm (5 feet 10.5 inches). Also, use the same size for the Trek Madone as well.
