Carbon steerer tube - Is damaged?

Hello,

I have a question for you – do you think this is damage to the carbon steerer tube? Looking from the top, the cross-section seems fine, but from the side, it looks as if the stem was tightened too much. However, I tightened it according to the torque specified on the stem. The indentation is about 0.1–0.2 mm deep. You can feel it with a fingernail, but there are no cracks. It just looks slightly compressed. What do you think?

Going from the photos it’s probably ok but if at all concerned you should take it to a shop :+1:

Hmm, if it doesn’t look cracked or feel soft like it’s been crushed then it’s probably okay. You can also try the coin tap test to see if it sounds much different than other areas around the top of the steerer.

It looks like that’s also around where the ply of carbon stops when they were doing the layup so it could just be a manufacturing imperfection.

But I’d consider having a shop take a look and maybe periodically check to make sure it’s not progressing.

Thanks for the advice, you really helped me and reassured me because I thought the steerer was done for.
