Bicycle travel case suggestions

Sorry I wasn’t clearer. My point was in comparing suitable options for hauling a bike & case. I use either National or Hertz and a truck is usually cheaper than any of the SUVs. I’m not trying to compare to compacts or even sedans.

I’m not sure about other provinces, but I never rent a car without getting rental insurance from MPI (Manitoba). You may want to check your credit card, but mine (RBC Avion) does NOT provide third party liability, which is in my opinion far more important. For $15 + $5/day, MPI will cover $10mln third party, $100k rental vehicle, plus daily allowances for rental insurance. Really cannot beat that deal!

It took me close to a month to get it. if you are traveling, best to get it 2 - 3 months beforehand. there was a lead time to produce the box. However, the delay was due to customs on my side deciding on how much to tax the box. in the end it was around 10% of the initial price. it varies from country to country. I hope this helps.

went for traditional as cost was a concert. if I had a choice, would def powder coat it and have my team logo on it as that would be pretty cool

FWIW I recently borrowed a mates EVOC bike bag and few with it a couple of times, loved it and have just picked up a lightly used second hand one for myself. Used it with a new (L) Top Fuel. The bonus is that the bag itself is pretty light - weight for the Top Fuel, with DD Minions fitted for a trip to Derby, TAS was 22kg all up. 23kg is the limit before excess baggage applies.

Has anyone had experience bringing bike cases on Italian trains? They allow bike boxes “110x80x40’, but my scicon aerotech TSA is 115x92x34. Think this will be an issue?

You sure your bike box is 94’ (I assume cm) wide?

Other than that, sorry no experience with Italian trains and how picky they are.

Edit…checked it, and it’s 34 cm wide. Probably just a typo.

I currently use an older scicon hard case, which fits into most cars just by having the back seats folded down. However with gravel bikes and their tires and rims getting wider and wider, I don’t think this case will work much longer.

I’m considering getting a Thule round trip transition hard case, more space for wider frames and tires, and can even fit mountain bikes. The down side of course is the case is bigger, particularly deeper. So anyone have any experience getting this into a trunk (with seats folded down) of an average car? Or will I be committed to SUVs or trucks for rental vehicles if I get this?

I’d check out the soft Round Trip cases. They are actually “semi-rigid” with armored panels on the side that still fold up small once unpacked. I find it super well thought out with the built in stand, plus the way the wheels are secured you can fit about any tire size. Very happy with this one.

One thing to remember is that the larger bags, while easier to pack, won’t fit in a lot of cars.

Not much to add. We’ve used hard cases and Pika Packworks soft cases. The soft cases are smaller externally, significantly lighter, and more malleable making them easier to deal with lugging through airports, on shuttle busses, fitting in taxis or rental cars, and minimizing size when not being used. The tradeoff, of course, is they’re less protective. Careful packing can help mitigate that, like removing the RD, putting spacer/protectors on the dropouts, padding the frame with foam tubes… For MTBs, I remove the fork to get the overall sized down.
