I know most (all?) Canadian credit cards, at least, exclude pickup trucks from their insurance. So even if the rental was cheaper you’d still need to pay the rental company’s insurance rates.

I’m not sure about other provinces, but I never rent a car without getting rental insurance from MPI (Manitoba). You may want to check your credit card, but mine (RBC Avion) does NOT provide third party liability, which is in my opinion far more important. For $15 + $5/day, MPI will cover $10mln third party, $100k rental vehicle, plus daily allowances for rental insurance. Really cannot beat that deal!
