Austin Rattler 2023

Good luck! it looked nice out there. I agree that it’s going to get warm. The end for last year got hot enough for me.

Congrats to everyone who lined up. Perfect course conditions and weather just like last year. I had a couple hiccups in my race (including a minor wreck), but overall a good day and hit my time/corral target.

Was a beautiful day out there! I wrote a few checks in lap 1-2 to try to stay in the lead group that my legs couldn’t cash later and had my most spectacular meltdown to date. (Also tried a bunch of SIS new beta fuel stuff, completely forgetting it has no sodium = cramp city). Ended up blowing up my rear wheel on the last chunky descent and had to carry the bike in, putting me out of my misery.

Puts me at 2-2 on clean races at this one.

Good work to all out there, one of the sneakily tougher courses in the lifetime series, in my opinion.

Yeah, sneaky is right. Nothing really technical, but not too many places you can just zone out and pedal. I lost my front wheel on a tight turn after swinging a bit off the racing line and that was that. I had a teammate go down hard early and sucked it up and finished. He was the 3rd number called for a lottery coin, so I think the cycling gods were looking to reward his suffering.

BTW, my wife was the crazy lady in the longhorn shirt cheering folks on by those 2 vans on the home stretch behind the lake.

I think I remember her being very supportive as I hiked through…:joy:

Good job you all. I finished 20 minutes faster than last year. Had no major cramps like last year. I used precision hydration’s products this year which worked well. I used Skratch’s Super High Carb mix which was too much for me and made me felt bloated and then started cramping. It was a great day for weather and traction [except for the random baby head rocks that sit in the middle of the trails]…

Sounds like it was a great day to be out on course having some type 2 fun.

Anyone else from the forum qualify or get a coin?
I haven’t done a qualfier since I got my coin at Tahoe, so as a Nor Cal based rider, all eyes are on Sea Otter (targeting 6:30 or better) and Tahoe again If I don’t get out of white at Sea Otter.

Thanks for posting, always enjoy watching your videos. Clearly you aren’t a fan of folks riding conservative in front of you (seems like you are bagging on the “roadies” in all your videos), but that’s pretty much the story of these type of races regardless of where you are in the field. We all get hung up at times lapping slower traffic, but it must be nice to have the skill/fitness to get in front of the big traffic jams on the first lap. For those of us further back, that first lap takes a while to sort out. Bummer on the crash.

@michelleihowe sighting at 5:59. Thanks for the video. I hadn’t seen much of the course. Very helpful!
