Aging cyclists - why do we do it?

I’m 44, living in France (irish but married to a french lady), living in the vineyards of the champagne ardennes region… (read - not a flat bit of road in sight anywhere)

I think I’m fairly fit and doing ‘ok’, but at least once a week i’ll get passed on climb by someone riding bike from the 80s or 90s who is clearly well into the 60s or more… i guess it’s part of the culture here and they’ve been doing it their whole lives, whereas I came to cycling after giving up running in my 30s, but hey, i’m doing okay and happy to go at my own pace and just get old and bald, but not old, bald and fat and unhealthy…

if they’re still doing it in their 60s and 70s, I have a few years yet to be able to catch up!
