2021 XC Bike Thread

I’m currently riding an Oiz H20 TR size L while waiting for my Spark RC to arrive sometime next year. And I must say I’m impressed. I figured it would feel heavy and slower compared to my old hardtail, but I keep breaking my old PR’s.

Only downside so far is that it won’t fit a 750ml bottle in the rear.

I’m thinking of some new wheels either Roval Control SL or enve M5. Any preference? Both seem to have a great warranty

Do you have a power meter on the H20? I’m looking at some affordable options and it doesn’t look like a stages or 4iii will fit.

Curious what you have done?

I’m considering the same wheels for my Epic Evo, but from what I researched the Enve M5s show an ETA of Oct ‘22. I found a few shops around my area that carries the Roval Control SL so I may go this direction since it’s readily available.

No power meter on the H20. Will save that upgrade for the Spark.

Couldn’t you go for a pedal based PM though?

I just ordered some Roval Controls, the cheaper version. Still 29mm internal, but 1450 grams for the wheelset. They are half the price of the SL’s and still have the great warranty.

Biggest reason I want lighter wheels is to get my bike travel bag under 50lbs. With how much I plan to travel with my bike if I have to pay for over 50lbs the cheaper wheels start to pay for themselves.

This is what I got too. Even though Specialized calls them “Weekend Hot Laps” wheels, they’re good enough for me for racing!

That’s some wicked justification there. Almost as good as “speeding tickets are a cost saving if my billable hours go up” :business_suit_levitating:

Science tends to do that to people.

Any Sniper riders? Half tempted to pick up a frame only and swap all the parts over from my Pivot Les (save the frame).

Anyone have a list of bikes available as frame only? Most are sold as complete bikes. I am hesitant to buy used, but it is an option. Found a 2018 Top Fuel for sale for an…okay…price.

I have a 2019 Sniper. Bought it as the 120mm trail version, but have since converted it over to 100mm. At 120mm, it’s super capable through technical descents, but I wanted it to be a bit more responsive. It’s still a really capable descender at 100mm, but is more “racey” and maneuverable through switchbacks now. I love the bike! If I were to purchase again, I’d consider a L frame instead of XL at 6’2". I have the seat slammed forward in the rails to get a comfortable position on the XL.

I definitely want something that will feel XC like. I have the 170mm bike for my trail riding, this would be race only. Intense is a local company to me too, which is a bit of a selling point (would love an American built bike, but that’s not easy).

I would be on a medium, even that will have 20mm more reach for me compared to my HT, but nothing I can’t adapt to.

After following this thread I finally pulled the trigger on a Specialized Epic Evo frame instead of going down the classic 100 mm travel Epic route. It‘s a 2021 frame equipped with a Rockshox damper what makes me complete it with a RS SID Ultimate. Any thoughts on this fork?
My Enduro is decked in Fox components and I would have preferred Fox on the Epic Evo as well but my OCD screams when thinking about mixing a RS shock with a Fox fork and swapping the shock as well blows the already strained budget.

I have the SID Luxe and really like it but I can’t compare it to the fox as I haven’t had the pleasure of riding the new 34. I don’t think that the difference will be worth the $$ changing it if you have a tight budget.

Thanks for the feedback. Most of the budget will be spent on these super-light Roval hoops so the Fox 34 could be a stretch

This is a long thread so it might have been discussed already but here goes. Has anyone got the insider details on the new Giant Anthem for 2022? I’m thinking it’ll be my best option, looking forward to more details.

Also, what about the Merida NINETY-SIX RC 9000? Anyone like it?

Best info seems on the weight weenie forum.

The Merida looks good too I think (trail version) but I haven’t seen either in person yet. No decent Shimano build on the Merida I think was one issue when it was brought up earlier in the thread (without scrolling all the way back, sorry).

Thank @mailman. Good to know I haven’t missed any details on the Anthem yet other than some teasers.

The Merida in Australia has an XTR option, but the local dealer said it’ll like be early 2023 before we see any.

I get that part. But I would try and convince your OCD it is about performance and not brand. Like people who mix AXS with XTR or something.

My E29 is on Ohlins, so I have to mix in a different brand dropper (coincidentally, Fox right now).
