I have an SB100 that I raced XC on and marathon events for a few season. It was sub 25 pounds. I don’t think there was anything inherent about the bike that I felt held me back in any way. I also rode it down the Whole Enchilada in Moab. Really fun and versatile bike.
As for the 115? No thanks.
That being said, I’m moving to a more dedicated XC rig for next year.
Allows the rider to get more ‘over the pedals’ which is generally thought to allow for more power output due to a more open hip angle and activation of larger muscle groups on back side of body. Glutes, hamstrings, etc…
I’ve had my seat slammed forward for years now and would never dream of going back. Road bike, MTB and now Gravel bike.
In MTB applications, also helps with handling as your weight is more cemeteries between the wheels vs, weighting the back and unweighted g the front.
I can see that, but like you said, the 115 is CHUNKY! I’m also with you, for full on XC racing I feel the need to stick with something lighter but for a trail bike, AM bike, enduro bike, the Yet’s rip. In fact, I’m probably buying an SB150 this week
The current Spark uses a 165x45 shock, so you’d want 165x37.5 to keep the same geometry but reduce travel. The Fox DPS comes in 6.5x1.5” (about 165x38) so I think that would do the trick.
Edit: my bad, I see now it’s a trunnion mount. So you could go Fox in 165x40, or RockShox SIDLuxe in 165x37.5. I don’t think you’ll find anything that plays nicely with the TwinLoc though.
Sold my scott scale, was gonna buy an intense sniper that a local dealer had as a demo, but ended up finding this little gem for $2300 with everything but the wheels so I immediately pulled the trigger. It’ll get either a set of enves or Stan’s podiums.
It’s the c frame with the s build. Fox stepcast performance, gx eagle, he upgraded the seatpost and stem to carbon. He said it was 24lbs with the reserve wheels and pedals. Whatever wheels I get should shed a bunch of weight.
I’m REALLY excited! Funny thing is it was never even really in my list of bikes I was considering, because the builds are a little bit boutique priced, but I have always thought they were really good looking bikes with clean lines, and of course vpp always gets great reviews.
Will update again on what set of wheels I end up going with
Day one! Didn’t need it, bike pedals so well plus cleans up those bars. I never missed it but I also never got a chance to race a true XC race with it. I’m really enjoying my new Ripley but I can totally see getting a true dedicated XC bike again, just need to justify it.
Did you have to do anything special? I was doing some reading and it looks like if you remove the lockout then the shock and fork are locked out by default?
I definitely want to remove mine and put a dropper
Yeah it’s a hassle, I had it converted at Fox. Requires a rebuild and a 3 position lever eyelet, probably a $200 job? The fork is easier to deal with, I’m pretty sure you can remove the remote interface parts and install a standard lever without sending it in. The other kicker is that the Blur uses a proprietary shock size and there’s none avail in the aftermarket that I’m aware of. Always loved that SC used standard shock sizes and I bought the first one that didn’t.
Whoa! 760mm handlebar! If I ride anything longer than 700mm my shoulders would be a lot shorter than they are. I hit every tree in the vicinity of 200meters.
