Are you using the older (Mark 1?) bottles or the newer (Mark 2?) bottles?
The Fly and Jet are mostly the same performance-wise but the latter is made of a biodegradable plastic.
I love my Jet 950ml bottles. The only downside I have is the flow is so good, I end up drinking all my water well before my riding mates sipping from their 500ml bottles are ready for a refill break.
I also have the Zefer Magnums and they perform fine for me but mine occasionally do leak from the nozzle if it isnāt perfectly extended outwards. Not sure if drink mix gets into the nozzle causing it to leak, either.
I donāt know why I keep forgetting about Decathlon. We even have a brick and mortar here albeit the other end of town where I rarely go. Iāve ordered some as well.
The 28 ounce / 828 ml version of this:
Can confirm.
Itās too early to say anything with statistical significance, but Iād say the same here. Iām not sure whether this is due to the nozzle or just knowing I have an extra 500+ ml with me.
I think this is my favorite thread on TR Forum. I ride almost exclusively with my 1L bottles now.
Hereās a pic of my 4xZefal setup from last year. 100 miles / 13k FT on the Blue Ridge Parkway with no refill spots avaliable. Had to swap out those rear cages for Lezyne Flow cages because they did eject twice on this ride.
was this the skyline drive?
It was the area around Mt. Mitchell. East of Asheville NC. The pic was taken at the Craggy Gardens Visitors Center.
I had a similar setup on my mountain/commuter bike except no cages inside the seat/top/down tube triangle. Xlab Gorilla XT cages off the seat for the win.
Has anyone had issues with 1L bottles popping out on rougher gravel roads? Iāve been told that having so much weight above where the cage grabs makes it far more likely for them to pop out. Makes sense to me. I want to use some 32oz bottles for a gravel race, but having a few less ounces is better than losing an entire bottle or two.
Just a thought, but has anyone tried putting a camelbak lid/nozzle on a zefal magnum bottle? That would solve all of my issues.
I just tried this with my camelback podium lid. I put it on my magnum and it screwed on there just fine. Itās definitely not form to it and the lid does stick above the body of the magnum a bit, but mine didnāt leak. I tested it over the sink and no issues. Squirts out just fine as well.
My second bottle cage for my mountain bike arrived a few minutes ago. Ask me again in a week or so. Itāll be an Elite Fly 1 liter bottle in an Elite Cannibal XC bottle cage. I have used these bottle cages for years: they are relatively inexpensive, and I have only lost a bottle once, and that was when I inadvertently hit a massive pothole on my road bike. I thought I must have cracked my rim.
Bingo. Thatās what I was hoping - best of both worlds. Thanks for confirming. Iāll give it a go.
I recently finished The Crusher (in the U.P. of Michigan) running 2 - 1 liter Zefal magnum bottles in stainless steel King cages on my forks.
That combination worked absolutely perfectly. With the right cage, and I think the King cage is tops as far as bottle retention goes, I would not worry about there being too much mass above to contact point between the bottle and the cage.
All the best,
Steve
I did a 70 mile fondo on the weekend with 2 Zefal bottles and one 700ml bottle in my jersey (finished fluid at the 2:45 mark). I picked up another Zefal bottle with 10 miles to go. Even with a finish time of 3:20 and mild conditions (albeit at altitude) I was on the verge of severe cramping for the last 15 miles. 1st and 3rd place did it on 2 bottles. No idea how. Lol
Iāve had no issues with the Zefal Magnum bottles in Specialized Rib Cage II holders. It is a tight fit, though, and some people have had issues with their cages cracking, but so far no issues.
My Decathlon 950ml bottles just got delivered so I will give one a shot later this afternoon on a post-work ride.
Are you using special bottle racks? The Gatorade bottle is just too wide for me.
To the Canadian folks out there.
These are cheap (under $5) and work awesome for me.
