Velo: Red Bull Buys Majority Stake of Bora-Hansgrohe

Except the UCI does regulate sponsors. For example lotteries are no longer allowed to be listed as team sponsors.

Lotto and FDJ would like to disagree….

Lotto is the Belgian Lottery. Oops… (Does the UCI know?)

I don’t think the UCI is the one banning lotteries from sponsoring sporting teams, I believe it’s a national decision. Do you have a source for the UCI regulating sponsors?

ETA (since if you request a source it’s polite to provide one yourself). This is Dutch law, not a UCI regulation

To suggest there’s a connection between energy drinks and injuries is asinine. Motocross racers/riders/freestylers have been breaking themselves off since long before energy drinks entered the scene and serious injuries will always be a part of the sport. The industry is also doing better than ever (3 new factories have released bikes this year alone), so I’m not sure what’s causing you to form these opinions.

BTW, the Monster/Red Bull/Rockstar cans and bottles that every rider on the podium is holding are filled with water.

The regulation is why Team Jumbo … had to drop the LottoNL part / partway with LottoNL. So what can I say?

I’m not certain that is accurate….LottoNL left the team in 2018 or 19 when Visma stepped in as a co-title sponsor.

Again, Lotto and FDJ both continue to be major sponsors. So there is clearly not a UCI regulation against lotteries sponsoring teams.

As for the Dutch law noted above, it will be interesting to see how that impacts non-Dutch teams when competing in the Netherlands.

This handwringing about a sponsor who makes a sugar and caffeine drink is absolutely bonkers. On one hand, yes the world doesn’t need more sugar in their diets, but if this isn’t acceptable, what sort of non-endemic sponsors would we be happy to see?

Could Oreo or Poptarts sponsor a team or is a sugar and fat sponsor going to ruin the sport? Would we be happy if Ford or VW sponsored a team, or would that just accelerate global warming?

It is classic alarmist thinking and the impact of a single new sponsor in cycling is likely to have very little impact on the sport.

VW is literally at the front of the TDF (ok the bmw is a little bit a head)

It’s time for me to do some VO2max intervals on the trainer…need to down me a Monster Energy drink to get the old body ready. :muscle:

And to think that is what I was doing is equally so!

Red Bull has a ‘brand’ and they get a near religious following. They also push people, or maybe ‘pull’ people into extreme sports. How many kids are dying for ‘a name’, and ‘fame’, and will push themselves to compete, and potentially get injured. I’m sorry you can’t see that, and I wished I had saved the link to that article. Sports in general can ruin a persons body. It can remove a person’s future. But it’s unlikely that they will be able to warp the pro cycling sport so easily. So I guess it doesn’t matter.

As I understand it, it’s a reference to the Grenadier SUV that Ratcliffe is building. They’ve even included it in promo photos for the cycling team.

As an aside, most, if not all, of the medical guidelines are now recommending zero alcohol intake. I do find it odd that sugar and caffeine are applauded as the best legal performance enhancers but energy drinks are somehow bad? And alcohol is cool? I’m surprised Red Bull didn’t come on as a title sponsor sooner to be honest. It’s known as “Crit Juice” locally. Very popular among racers. I see this as a good thing. Maybe Monster can get in. Monster Nike as a new team with Cav as the headline rider or DS.

You all realized how hard is to put 90g of carb per hr on the bike, I don’t think a can of redbull would hurt.

Gotta fund those Pinarello purchases.

:flushed: something to keep an eye on.

DPA reports Bora Hansgrohe could launch its ride into the Red Bull era with an all-new identity at the 2024 Tour de France.

That to me is the most interesting aspect of the article…I always assumed they would try to get their individual riders on a team they control, along with other big names.
