Installed new seals today so we’ll see how it goes.
Installing those flangeless seals straight and at the right depth was damn hard work though. They always seem to go on a little askew, or end up too deep. I’m using a unior seal driver but I might invest in a fox one next time. Can anyone feed back if the fox tool drives them nice and straight and to the right depth?
First, kudos for taking care of your stuff, most riders don’t then moan when they have issues (far bigger than yours) That’s far from the worst stanchion damage I’ve ever seen, and your assessment is right, it’s not a big deal especially based on the location.
Fox should have the latest seal drivers that are designed for flangeless seals. They make the job so much easier, it centers the dust wiper and puts a hard stop at the exact location they set at the factory. I had to use an older driver the other day and it was terrible. If you do your own services as it seems you do, the investment in the seal driver is worth it.

My LBS did my fork service when I got my frame warrantied. I think the seals were $25 and $50 for the labor, less 10% team discount. I thought it was very reasonable considering they put new oil in the fork as well
Me also. On my bike, both seals went in nice and straight. On my wife’s bike, one is straight, the other a little askew. This was because it was 10:30pm at night and I was starting to get sloppy. With care and attention I think you can get the seals to go in straight.
Chain question. When I got my Ultegra 8050 new groupset my first chain lasted almost 10,000 miles between indoor and out, using the Park Tool CC3.2 it wouldn’t fit between links no matter how hard I pushed at the .5% marker. I then replaced the chain with Dura Ace and cassette with Ultegra. The current DA chain has 4,229 miles indoor and out and the same tool now fits with a little bit of a push on the same .5% marker
Are DA chains not as long lasting as Ultegra, generally? I’ve heard the hollow pins are stronger but not sure what to make of this. Same cleaning protocol for both
Got a pedros chain checker, retired the old DA chain. Must say the .5% wear really adds up by the end
On the maintenance note, my BB was sounding and feeling a little gritty when I had the chain off, any suggestions for a BB90 replacement? Not interested in ceramic stuff, and currently don’t have issues with creaking or clicking or anything but it’s got 20k miles indoor and out so probably due for replacement
