I think that the trend of putting on gravel events is cooling a bit, but there are still some new events that have popped up recently. I’m only referencing California. I was lucky to be down in San Diego for a few years where I re-started riding after a few years away from the bike. The gravel culture in SD is fantastic and there are so many places to ride within the county. I do recall that one event failed to materialize due to permit issues, specifically The Hardman Classic (a race, not a ride) in Corona. Other than that, BWR seems to hold it’s ground, although it’s lost it’s luster since the LTGP came on the scene. As mentioned, there are other grass roots events in the area and plenty of free rides courtesy of Gravel Stoke, and a favorite called South Bay Brew Baix.
A newer promoter has started an event called Gravel & Wine in Temecula and expanded a bit by doing an event on the Central Coast. There are at least a few events in that neck of the woods.
Up north, the Grasshopper Adventure Series seems to be going strong despite the high cost of the events (imo). Then there’s Bike Monkey, Sea Otter which offer higher priced and well produced events. Alternatively, there’s been a grass roots being put on for the second year called Gravel Infestation by a local club. There was also something called Gravel Condor Challenge put on in Hollister.
All of this is to say there are a lot of events all over the state and it’s still growing. I think the gravel crowd is still growing as well because road riding has become increasingly risky. I think that the cost of events is a big factor because many events are not local and will require at least an overnight stay. With that said, a marquee event may be a one and done for me as I like some variety without spening a ton of money if I can.
