[request] Stop sending speed data to strava

The easy way to get the results you want is to change the wheel circumference in the “devices” section of the TR app. Set it to zero, and TR will send a zero distance to Strava. Adjust it to taste if you want TR sending “realistic” data to Strava. I’ve reduced mine from 1800 to about 1600 for that purpose.

Yes, having an option would be nice. But for now, you can get the results you want easily.

  • Sadly, that does not work in all cases. It’s been mentioned at least a couple of times above (and I think other topics as well), that this can fail for some users.

So there is still a legitimate reason for this request to continue.

It sounds like having followers on Strava can be annoying. :man_shrugging:

TR should definitely continue sending speed and distance data to Strava. Many people compete in Strava challenges which require this such as the Rapha Festive 500. Doing that particular challenge outdoors is out-of-the question for many. What would be great is if there was programming in place which calculated a realistic outdoor distance equivalent based on the workout’s average w/kg output.

I get a fairly representative average speed on my trainer riding in the big gear and middle range cogs which is also good for the chain and getting realistic road feel.

I think the real solution would be for TR to add more granularity to all of the sync options it offers beyond yes / no. This is the same issue with the change to send PL to Strava as part of the image. Give users more choice upfront, and let us choose.

But I don’t think TR should manipulate any of the data it does send, as that is a path to third parties not trusting TR data. “Realistic “ or not, data should be sent unadulterated. Capture data with the highest fidelity possible, write that to the .FIT file, and that’s it

It would be in Strava’s best interest if the distance shown from trainer rides was representative of the actual effort so as to maintain the legitimacy of their distance based challenges which accept indoor and outdoor rides. I could do a very easy endurance ride at 40% FTP on TR in the hardest gear so it may show me doing 60km/hr which would put me in an undeserved spot on the leaderboard since I get a long distance without much stress or time.

I also think these Strava challenges can make cyclists faster as it’s another form of training motivation.

We can agree to disagree. The only way for Strava to do this would be to build its own cycling physics model, and recalculate speed and distance for every virtual ride. And that still would have pretty big errors due to unknown/ inaccurate rider weight, rider CdA, etc.

Once you let virtual rides in, you accept that quantities like speed / distance lose meaning.

Strava calculates power and calorie estimates (if you don’t have a power meter) based on your weight and your speed data.

Zwift calculates your speed (more accurately than TR because the estimates are higher than TR  )

I don’t think this is a problem the engineers at TR can’t solve.

I’d like to track “miles” on TR bc I track the wear and tear on my Kickr Bike. Ultimately, (and I realize I’m in the minority) I don’t care about the accuracy.

Does the kickr bike not have the option to report virtual speed (based on power) rather than flywheel speed?

The wahoo kickr and core trainers (and maybe the snap?) have this option and I think it’s a great solution to track realistic distance/speed while doing indoor rides.

This is obviously ignoring the can of worms which is deciding if virtual distance (what you want) or flywheel revolutions (what you have) is the best way to track kickr bike wear

Ironically, this whole debate may be settled when/if Zwift does indeed swallow TR. Assuming TR would adopt the Zwift physics engine that determines speed, or we’d just be forced to ride in Zwift’s virtual world.

I have no idea. I haven’t used the app since I configured the shifters and gears. It’s more of a novelty though - Strava allows you to tag your gear with each ride and it tracks your distance on those parts. It would be sorta nice to have a total distance in Strava as well as being able to break it down into how much on each bike. I mean I do that but I think the numbers I’m getting on the Kickr Bike are low for some reason.

Update on this. We’re a few weeks away from having a feature out where you can specify if you want to send speed data to strava, and how you want to send it.

The options will be:

  • Yes/No - Send Speed data to Strava

Then if you choose “Yes”, you’ll get these two options:

  • Send Trainer Speed
  • Send Virtual Speed (based on physics model)

Sounds great @Nate_Pearson Is virtual speed based on a speed from power factor?

On Strava you can choose to hide stats like speed so that no-one asks you moronic questions.

@Nate_Pearson thanks! Now we can stick a fork in this discussion thread.

Which would be a better representation? Trainer or virtual?

Whichever is greater

I’ve just come on this forum to complain about this and I’ve seen this bug is being fixed.

Bravo TrainerRoad.

Yes. Just a simple physics model. There are assumptions of course, but it should get you a lot closer than trainer speed.

This sounds like part of a much larger and very exciting update.
