Switched off all sounds except Varia on my Bolt now and will give it a try. Also I have switched off all screens except Map and Climb, have minimized Data fields to the absolute necessary.
Curious to try this profile.
Honest question…how often are people using navigation? If I am not travelling, I almost never use navigation. I know all of the roads / routes around here and using navigation seems redundant.
My training rides are on familiar roads and I never use navigation on these. A few longer rides on the weekend will connect two familiar areas, and I’ll make a short ‘connector route’ (typically 2-10 miles) and load it while approaching the unfamiliar area. Full navigation is only done on longer group rides in new areas.
Definitely less than 5% of the time for me.
I actually moved to a different country recently so right now still yes, I use it and need it.
But even when I know the routes, still planning the route and using navigation I get additional data like upcoming climbs, grade etc.
Garmin’s ClimbPro is surprisingly useful, so if doing training on a known climbing ride (for example hill repeats) I’ll make a short route that includes the climb.
that is actually a very good idea. thx!
i wonder how much more useful climb pro is compared to Wahoos standard climb page with data concerning grade, etc
but that is OT.
true, i will try having all stuff switched off except the Varia alerting
The only beeps on my 530 is radar, eat/drink alerts, and navigation. I’ve developed a real good feeling for power outputs and don’t have to glance very often to do my workouts, so beeping/alerts are disabled on going over/under power targets.
The only beep allowed on my bolt is also reserved for the varia. For navigating just add ‘distance to next cue’ field - a countdown for when I might want to take a look at the map for a turn.
For me I really only use navigation so my family can see where I am at on my route with the new live tracking.
But I do turn off alerts if I know where I am going.
I’ll use it occasionally but less and less frequently. I’m in the same situation as @airteluser having moved countries in the not too distant past and it was invaluable then.
Won’t live tracking at least still give your family your location? Maybe not where you are in a route relative to finishing, but they know where you are…I just have Live Tracking enabled and tell my wife I am going to ride for XX hours…she can then usually gauge where I am, how far out I may be.
I totally get why people would use nav if they have just moved to a new area / country, of course…I’m referring more to people that have been in a given area for awhile. Was just curious why they would be using that feature…thanks for the responses.
Yes it does give location as you know but easier for them to see where I am relative to the course plot. Every situation is different on why
Went on a ride today, great to have only the Varia sounds swithed on, all other off…thx folks! Good idea.
Also I reduced all data fields to map, climb, grade, some distance stuff. That was very enjoyable!
So switching off all sounds except Varia alerts is the way to go. Also: it was superwindy today, still no problem to hear the Varia alerts on the Wahoo Bolt.
Thank you for the advise. I will definitely keep the Radar!
The Varia 315 is currently 20% off ($120) on the Garmin and REI sites…this is the model w/o a light, only the radar.
were you able to resolve the issue? i’m getting the same issues on mine, but i checked and the firmware is updated on all devices.
Unfortunately not really. The customer service at Garmin was really responsive and helpful. I updated the firmware and it sorta helped. Now it just says it drops out less frequently without actually dropping. Still annoying but at least its functional. I could have pursued it more with Garmin but I sorta got tired of working on it.
If you do find a good fix, I’d love it if you posted it on here.
thanks for the update. let me talk to Garmin customer support as it just randomly decided to drop signal to my Edge over the weekend even though it was fully charged and recently updated.
i’ll update the thread if they provide any good info.
Hey tadaka - you inspired me to look further into the problem again, and I’m 90% sure I figured it out.
The Varia is connecting to my IPhone and dropping signal with my Wahoo. I turned off the bluetooth on my Iphone and the problem went away. I can update after a few more long rides, but I’m pretty sure this is the issue.
thanks for the update! i’ll don’t think i’ve paired the lights to my phone, but i’ll check it the next time I go for a ride.
I also called Garmin to talk about the issue and they said that since my unit was out of warranty (i have the older 510 version) they said that i could do a replacement with a ‘like new’ 515 for $90 (available now). Interestingly they said that if i wanted to replace it with another 510 it would cost me $100 and i’d have to wait until the end of April for one.
