Now I’ve googled it it’s actually night time flash I am using in the day. Whilst it might get lost in light pollution in a bright place there’s not much light noise on a dreich Scottish day. I guess its worth depends where you ride ![]()
Is there any rumor about a successor for the 515?
I think it will depend on your bike set-up. I have dropped seatstays on my bike, so can use the seattube for additional mounting areas.
Dunno about the SWAT options, but I am sure there is a way to MacGyver something together using that ot a K-Edge GoPro saddle mount.
It doesn’t feel like the 515 has been out that long to be honest?
You charge everything else daily. Might as well add this
.
No seriously unless you are doing 5+ hour rides you need to. I typically ride 5 times a week around 1 hour give or take and only charge once a week but still have battery left and this is on auto light network setting.
Daylight flash strobes pretty bright (120 lumens iirc), but the LED is actually off for most of the flash cycle. Night flash is 60 lumens, but the LED is on for more of the flash cycle. So Day Flash actually uses less power, despite being brighter.
Huh…Thanks for that. I’ll double check my unit (if I ever get to go back outside ![]()

) but my impression was that Daytime mode was not as bright.
bought a 515 today, quite curious to try it tomorrow
A true game changer…and I just realized that I forgot mine today. Weather is finally warm enough to ride outside (50*…yay!!) and I don’t have it. I’ll feel very vulnerable w/o it!!
I agree with Power13 - this was the #1 game changer in cycling - huge
I was 60/40 if it was just going to be a toy/gimmick till I tried it. Its not. I wont ride public roads without it any longer.
I definitely want one, and it’s great to read how helpful it’s been thanks everyone, but I would need to upgrade my Garmin 800 and I can’t afford to buy both ![]()
Am I right in remembering that there’s a traffic setting so that it flashes more as traffic gets closer?
This prediction was 100% correct…amazing how fast you get used to / dependent on the Varia.
@Pipipi There are little icons (or dots depending on what computer you have) that represent the location of cars to you. They move up the screen as they get closer, so you know when they are about to pass you.
Yes it does change the flash pattern as cars get closer.
I actually have 2 varia tail lights, I kept the original RTL500 as a spare, having been hit by cars twice, I wouldn’t ride on the road without a varia now days
I bought it from Probikeshop (French based) website in Germany and ordered the blinking version. Guess what? Once i was riding around 6 am in the morning, police stopped me because my light is not suitable for StVO, nothing serious probably they just checked if i stole the bike but they clearly warned me that this is not suitable, in another case i got the warning from an hiker while i was riding that blinking lights are not allowed and he kept shouting, i was able to hear it even after 500 m ![]()
I don’t really understand why the German regulations ask for a solid state light and not flashing. It’s pretty apparent some folk notice a flashing light better ![]()
Never have ridden or thought of riding without since I got my 510 2+ years ago.
This can be easily demonstrated by just walking up from behind the bike when it is parked. It goes from more of a sedate pattern to hyper flash pattern. It also appears to be brighter to my eye. Not sure if the light output increases or if it is just the more hyper flash the appears brighter but definitely more noticeable.
yeah, absolutely true and yes, confusing.
Just wondering: Wahoo mentions the function to toggle Radar function on/off, so not only the Alert on/off, but also the radar… does that mean I can remotely switch off the Varia 515 even with a Elemnt device?
