Here’s the deets on some primo, Midwestern gravel.
lol
Racing in Indy tomorrow. This appears to be a painful decision now that I see the start list.
If anyone’s interested in a road race in the Detroit area, come race the M1 Cycling Classic at the M1 Concourse (car racing circuit) this Sunday (7/14).
I’ll be there, racing and volunteering
Well Indy crits masters field was stacked. That’s a lot of national champions in one race.
Must be working their way up north for Chicago Grit (former Intelligentsia series).
Nats are also in 2 weeks, peoples form is on point
Kyle Perry lapped the 123 but he skipped the p12
Here goes dust bowl
Just did the 45 mile version of the Dust Bowl, which was great. I’m now thinking about going long. Has anyone done the Rode to Hell in Michigan? What were the conditions like? Was it mostly gravel? How much sand? Thanks in advance.
How was Dustbowl, @ABG?
A lot of crash’s ,
I need to do a race recap. Almost home
Dust bowl went good but not how I wanted. Here comes a story.
My plan was to camp at the race with my family. Woke up at 2am Friday to get the camper packed. Goal was to leave at 2pm. That didn’t happen and we left at 5pm. On our way to the race the ac quit working in the car and the thing we were towing acted up. Needless to say I was back home at 9pm. I forgot to eat all day Friday and only had cereal at 9pm. Race started at 8am and I was 3hr30min away.
Woke up at 3am, took my meds and packed my car. I can’t eat till an hour after i take my meds, I threw bowl of cereal in the car and got on the road with a 7:10 arrival time. Arrived at 6:45
Since I was solo I ran a hydration pack. My goal was make the lead group, and didn’t know what everyone’s fueling requirements would be, didn’t want to have to stop and then chase. I loaded 100g carbs in 2 32oz bottles and 200g carbs in my top tube bag. I put 2 bottles in the drop bag just in case people stopped.
Race seemed to have some fast people in it. I tried to stay towards the front. Top 10-30, there were some well represented teams and I didn’t want to mix in with the early stuff. Crashes occurred every turn, and there are a lot of turns. An apex guy went off the front 35 miles in, and then another apex guy jumped across mile 42 and the group was content and rolling slow knowing mile 48 was the major hill of the day. I should have gone with that 2nd apex guy knowing at this point I wasn’t firing on all cylinders.
I was sitting 10-15th going into a very loose gravel down hill with a turn at the bottom. Someone in front over cooked it and caused a crash which I had to put a leg out for, by the time I got through the covered bridge I had a 10sec gap to close. I tried to finish the climb and get moving. The group was 10 sec in front of me. I caught a guy who was short, so no draft and we tried to chase back on. After 15min a group of 10 caught us.
At mile 70 the group had 2 min on us and I had switched to survival mode. My stomach had soured and i wasn’t able to eat or drink the final 40miles, I felt like I was going to poop my bibs. I finished and went to the bath room and got a shower. I couldn’t eat food after the race and felt sick the whole drive home with numerous stops.
I topped 25 the race and podiumed my age group. I did something dumb the final 30 miles but that’s on me, I could won my age group if I played my cards differently.
Overall with 8 hours of sleep in 2 days and a ton of stress the result is pretty solid. Bike worked great, I ran 38 rear psi and 34 front. Pressure should have been 30/32 with the 45 or lower. I can’t figure out a good tire pressure for loose gravel.
Vegan cyclist video should be fun to watch. As should dillmans since he won.
This might be my last race of the year. Cycling is getting in the way of other stuff right now. My Ctl is 60, and on a downward trend. Weirdly enough I set my 4 hour avg power record yesterday.
Since we all agree MN is the Midwest.
But apparently we dont agree on what get posted in a 2024 thread
87 days until Iceman…
There’s like 20+ gravel races in MI and you’re for some reason looking forward to the worst one.
DAMn this weekend, Who’s going? I’ll be there for the Double! You can follow along on Track Leaders
FYI, usage of track leaders is optional so I wouldn’t trust it for actual race position.
