Minnesota is generally Ok with the geography cops. But they don’t appreciate chatter about NE or Kansas. I think SD and ND get a pass because they don’t have as many events in general.
Happy to hear you had a good race. My race went pretty good as well even though my legs didn’t feel great through the taper. Worst case scenario I wanted to be sub 8 hours with a stretch goal to be closer to 7:30. I exceeded my expectation finishing in 7:20, good enough for 24th overall. Super happy with my fitness and my results! I tried to stay with the front-ish group in the beginning but knew it’s a long day and had to settle into my own pace. So after about the first hour or so I was mostly by myself off and on. Guys were crushing that 1st lap as it were a 1 lap race. It was wise for me to settle into my pace as I slowly starting picking off those hard chargers, being 34th after lap 1, 28th after lap 2 and ultimately 24th.
This was all without a bike computer due to a crash after the midway aid station on lap 1. Those twisty pines were coming fast, I had too much speed, couldn’t tell if the trail went right or left, so I choose neither and ran directly into a tree. Broke my computer mount, got a bit banged up, but was able to collect my gear and continue. Unfortunately, had to put my Wahoo in my back pocket but luckily I had a watch and just used that for time coordination.
I think what surprised me most was how good I felt after lap 2 going into my last lap. My legs were tired, but not completely trashed. After lap 2 I was only 4:52 hours in and I knew I had 2:38 hours to finish my last lap to reach my 7:30 stretch goal. That was super comforting and I even backed off the effort a bit knowing that I have the Coast 2 Coast 100 mi the following weekend.
If you have 7+ hours to kill…, lol. Of course my GoPro battery died 5 minutes from the finish .
Awesome work . Doing the Coast to Coast 100 with my wife this weekend as well and playing domestique. Good luck in your race and you can look for the tall couple in the Rock n Road kit coming in around 7 hrs
For the 100 mile, at least the warm up and beginning 1:30 hours were dry. Then the rain started and the last 2-3 hours were a torrential downpour! Huge puddles everywhere and the big downhills had huge rain ruts going in every direction with rivers flowing through them. As a MTB’er and lacking of common sense this benefitted me as I just sent it creating big gaps, lol. I ended up solo for the last 35 miles, never seeing anyone ahead or behind me, good enough for 4th overall and 1st AG.
Rear brakes were metal on metal and at the finish neither of my wheels would spin freely. I must have been loosing a ton of watts and I can tell you I definitely felt and heard it during my solo effort.
Dude, I saw Rob M. start posting real time photos on IG yesterday and it made me queasy. Almost the entire state was covered with rain the entire day. I had to look away
The guys at my LBS in Chicago service a handful of riders who did the epic/disastrous version 2 or 3 years ago and they said it just “deleted” their drivetrains. I’d never heard that term before
So I just found out about the Core4 Race in Iowa City…which just so happens to fall on the weekend my daughter moves in to her dorm at Iowa.
My wife has resoundingly put her foot down on this issue and told me that under no circumstances will I be racing. Some nonsense about the weekend being about my daughter and her transition to college, blah, blah, blah.
Definitely looks like a cool race…a bit like the Rule of 3 race in Bentonville, with road, gravel and singletrack all mixed together. I’ll definitely give it a go in the coming years.
