Midwest Events for *2023*

Based on an email I received this morning, it looks like the BWR Michigan is going to be one-and-done?

See below…

Based on my experience last year, I’m not surprised. Anyone have any definitive info?

EDIT: From VeloNews – no mention of Michigan.

It’s new this year!

Sharing this link from another thread about recommended Gravel Events … I had never heard of these, and they look pretty interesting.

Nice! Gives us a couple nice rides around Badger. Assuming Dirty Badger is held this year.

I just checked out the site for the Hogback Gravel race … I gotta say, I really like their description. Thanks for sharing.

As I get more experience with different gravel races, I am beginning to understand that I have a strong appreciation for races that, 1) allow riders to stay on their bike, or have a VERY reasonable chance to stay on their bike for the entire race, and 2) have courses that aren’t trying to “trick” you by ensuring that you’re going to be over/under biked at some point. This is just my personal preference. I know many others enjoy steeplechase/cyclocross style gravel races … but it’s not my cup of tea.

From their website:

“Your pick of the Whole Hog (70-mile course) or the Half-Hog (40-mile course) both designed to test your limits, or to let you enjoy the scenery with the gravel family, Hogback GRVL will meet you head on. There are no B-level roads on the course — all dust, no mud. Our event will be live-streamed for those who prefer supporting others over sweating on a bike, and for those to watch after the race. Additionally, chip-timing will be utilized for accurate time tracking.”

This one sounds pretty sweet from that perspective. Thanks for the share!

It’s a pretty beautiful part of the state. Punchy climbing through Madison County(where Bridges of Madison County was filmed).

@Cory.Rood At the final edition of 24HOC I was gut punched to ride over to Madison Co, see a historic covered bridge sign at a T intersection in the middle of the night, and naturally the route went the other way. :joy:

Definitely keeping Hogback on the radar for those bridges and my similar course/race design tastes to @batwood14 :+1:

Hogback GRVL definitely sounds like a great event……but it would be about 5 1/2 hours drive for me. Not certain I want to commit to that so early in the year with a good chance of the weather being :poop:.

Based on how poorly/oddly it was promoted leading into it and executed on race day, this is no surprise.

I’m in for the Lumberjack 100 this year. So far my only sign up.

I checked out their website and couldn’t find the updates or notes you reference for the 2023 race.

Where can I find the mea culpa?

I’m (VERY) unlikely to do the C2C this year, but if should I lose my mind and and decide to do a 200 mile race one day, this is the one I’d do … so I monitor it’s progress.

So tempting … I love the idea and romance(?) of dipping your wheel in Lake Huron at sunrise and trying to beat it across the state to touch Lake Michigan before sunset.

I’ll definitely wait at least another year to see how all the brave souls fare this year vis a vis sand course composition. As I’ve said here and other places, I’m not into protracted sections of hiking.

I hope the corse is better for the people in 2023.

I think may 6th might be in the sweet spot… Not cold anymore, but not 100 degrees yet. Rain maybe, but God wouldn’t ruin our chance to ride bikes.

Mtb racing in NE one weekend per month:

The Black Hills of SD:
28 Below fat bike race
Pine Island Gravel 70/110/210
Dakota Five-0 MTB

Has anyone mentioned the Dirty Donut yet? Part bike race, part eating competition…you get 5 min taken off your finish time for each donut you consumer during the ride.

Being fast does NOT mean you will win!!

There is also a competitive race on offer (ie you don’t stop for donuts) – it recently had a write up in Velonews as an alternative to Unbound if you didn’t get in via the lottery (because it is held the same weekend).

Long live Michigan Gravel :metal:

New episode of the Dirty Chain Podcast dropped and they meet with a production team that puts on a bunch of races in Michigan … tris, gravel and fondos.

Always a good listen. Then again, I’m partial to the mitten🤘
