Is a MTB tire the fastest and best tire for Gravel racing?

panics and doubts tire choice before race this weekend

While interesting, I don’t think it’s that surprising. These road race tires are much faster than everything else. I’d be leery of using such a tire on more than a short section of class 2 though.

Now continental, make me a 35-40 gp5000!
Edited for plea

It’s time for me to just buy some thunderburt 2.1 super grounds, slap them on my 29mm internal width rims, and hope front and rear fits my crux!

Hmmmm…don’t think that combo will work in the rear. Should be fine up front, though.

Report back and let us know!

I’m pretty sure it won’t fit in the rear because of my 29mm rims making the 2.1" tires run a bit wider. I’m more crossing my finger and hoping the tires don’t stretch.

If they don’t fit in the rear, I’m going to run my current s-works pathfinder 42mm that runs at 47mm actual width.

I tried this way, and posted photos of this on a thread here, way back in late 2023… Nextie 29mm internal rims, with 2.1" TB’s left about 3mm all around in front, and less than 2mm in the rear… So no, they don’t fit in the usable sense of the word.

Darn. <2mm, even in the dry, sounds like a potential frame disaster that I shouldn’t risk.

I found the TB’s to stretch 2+mm in the week or so after install on 27mm wheels.

Or maybe this is an excuse to buy some 23mm internal width Enve G23s

Solid logic…can’t really refute it.

Realistically a new frame altogether might be the most practical.

Better logic.

Enve Mog with 2.2 Race Kings, here I come!

Are you sure the Kings will fit on the Mog with the wide rims? You could end up in the same situation, just with wider tires  .

Anecdotal evidence - but I’ve heard from a few ppl that the Racekings are very tight in the MOG!

I’m personally waiting more more bikes that official clear 2.2. Bikes like the Allied that are not 5K a frameset lol

That is correct…I think most ENVE riders are using 2.1’s or 50’s in the rear.

only issue i have with it is it does not have udh..

Seigla is udh and officially supports 2.2’s, but no integrated cables. And front suspension option if that’s your thing. I almost pulled the trigger on a frame, but wasn’t going to change before unbound and would like to ride one first. I think geometry will work, but bottom bracket drop concerns me a little (especially running mtb tires)

If anyone still has a spare BRR.com vote and is interested in the rolling resistance of large tires, the Schwalbe G-One Speed Pro 2.35" is currently in a nail-biter of a battle with a Pirelli 28mm tire in the voting list. This tire is by Schwalbe’s own claims ā€œthe fastest-rolling tire they’ve ever tested in their labā€.

An earlier iteration of this tire - the Schwalbe Big One - was at one point the fastest tire ever tested on BRR - and 4 watts faster than the Thunder Burt.

The tire will drop out of the voting list if it doesn’t win this month, so it would be really nice if it could win!

I’d also be very curious to see that tire’s results. No vote left though…
