Is a MTB tire the fastest and best tire for Gravel racing?

Yes, but it looks like garbage which is worth at least 20 watts.

It may be so obvious that it’s presumed here and need not be explicitly stated, but doesn’t optimal wheel and tire selection depend on the terrain you will be riding in? In upstate NY where I am, the dirt roads are smooth and fast hard-pack. 700c wheels with narrower tires that have a continuous centerline are my choice (WTB Vulpines) because they feel faster, and I’ve even thought about using tires with a file tread. But I also have a set of 650b wheels I got to use with 48-50c tires when riding in Patagonia, AZ where the dirt roads are washboard covered with loose and deep sand and gravel, or elsewhere where the terrain is more technical.

I feel like he did that for some minor aero benefit.

No, it was a clearance issue.

I’m going to have to checkout those thunderburt tires. I’ve considered the Vittoria mezcals for my lauf Seigla but the thinderburt’s look nice. Pathfinder pro 47s I have on a nice as long as it’s dry and not a ton of loose stuff

Next race has some steep rutted descents, mostly Forest Service roads, so going to give the RaceKings a shot on my Seigla.

Anyone know if those are Super Gounds or Super Races? Quick google and looks like they both have red labels but seems like Super Race is only available in tan wall maybe??

Does anyone know how wide a conti Raceking 2.2 gets in a 25mm internal rim?
Wondering if it would fit in a carbonda 696 frame

Here is the update on the Mog with mtb tires.

Running the Dylan Johnson special, 2.1 Thunder burts which measure 51mm on 24 ID. There is a ton of clearance in the front and rear with this setup. Bike weighs in at 20 lbs with pedals/garmin/flat kit and tt bars.

Looking forward to your review of performance.

The Seigla seems like such a good value… lighter and cheaper than the 3T Extrema (which also has lots of room) and can fit these MTB tires officially not just ā€˜there’s room’ sorta thing like some of the other competitors.

I’ve been really happy with it. Turns out the 100 mile gravel race I did yesterday had a last minute course change. Instead of steep and rutted it was a little flatter but very loose and deep. RaceKings were perfect. Was with a group of six who were running 40s to 45s and just rode away from them. Mine measure a little over 50 and I’ve got 8mm of clearance on both sides, front and rear.

Also interested in how you like the Thunder Burt’s. And, what TT bars are those? Like them?

I am actively looking for a MOG now. Goal is to see if I can snag an in-person discount at one of the expos this year, and I’m officially shopping for components if/when they go on sale. Don’t really ā€œneedā€ it until next winter so have time on my side.

The 2.2s measure 50? What internal rim width?

Just measured. 55 on 24 IW ethirteen XCX alloys. Don’t know why I had 50 in my head… ethirteen says they can take 57s but recommends 38-47 for optimal profile.

I’ll do a follow up when I get a couple hundred miles on the setup, weather hasn’t been great and I’m on a recovery week at the moment. I’ve got some wireless blips ordered for the TT bars, hope to get those installed this week.

The TT bars are Enve Aero Clip ons, they only working on the SES Aero handlebar so I’d suggest speccing the module with the Aero handlebar to give you the option.

Any concern / issue using the SES Aero bar off-road? I thought it was a road specific bar.

I’ve ran the same bars and clip ons off-road without any issue. I’ve got the SES Aero bars on my Crux and my drop bar Epic HT. For what its worth, most clip-ons are listed as road compatible only. I’ve always looked at the use of road things off-road as this; if its built for road use, its been tested and made durable enough to survive a pothole strike at 30mph on ā€œskinnyā€ tires. Thats about as rough of as any hit you’ll take on gravel, with more tire to cushion the blow…

It’s funny that the Thunder Burt is just now getting some ā€œcredā€ with a few influential people discussing them… I’ve been using them on my gravel setups dating back to 2018. The Racing Ralph in a 27.5" x 2.1" with Pacestar is another stellar one that was still available if you dug around a bit.

Not specific to that setup (and may not even work if that’s a proprietary stem), but I run one of those redshift suspension stems on my gravel bike. With aero-bars installed, you can really feel it removing stresses from the bar setup when hitting rough stuff/holes. I’m a fan of the stem from a comfort standpoint with or without aerobars and I think aerobars makes it even more compelling from a safety standpoint. Hitting something by surprise on a rigid aerobar can be pretty sketchy.
