Handlebars - Narrow or Aero?

I think even the 320 is 350 wide at the drops…I think.

Really? Well in that case…

Don’t quote me on this but I believe the new UCI rule is based on an outside-to-outside measurement at the widest point (drops) whereas most bars are measured centre-to-centre at the drops so it actually still leaves quite a bit of leeway.

My 36s measure about 365 c-c and a bit over 390 outside to outside at the drops.

I’ll try and get some pics tonight…but I am using the ENVE SES Aero bars. I ordered 40cm but they measure more 38 C-t-C at the hoods.

I’m interested in these as well for another bike. Please do post if you have the time. Thank you

What is everyone’s thought on alu vs carbon?

Enve Aero bars are measured drop to drop. The AR bars (and the rest of their bar lineup) is measured hood to hood.

Yup…my bad. I ordered 42’s, not 40’s.

Typing a list of handlebars that are 36 cm or less for everyone’s information:

Enve - 35 cm hoods, 40 cm drops (flat top)
Prime Handlebars - 36 cm hoods & drops (carbon or alloy available)(flat top)
EXS cycling - 34 cm hoods 36 cm drops (round)
Lambda Racing X wing handlebars - 33 cm hoods 40 cm (flat top)
Hup cc Children handlebar - 32 cm hoods & drops (round)
Fouriers handlebar - 32, 34 , 36 cm not sure but i think for the drops its + 2cm wider (round)
coefficient cycling - 38 cm hoods 40cm drops however looks like the most ergonomic handlebar (round)

For context, I’m on Enve handlebars and bought the hup CC narrow handlebars. I tilt my hoods inwards and the hood width measurement is 28 cm. The problem with the Enve’s is that on the drops I will roll my wrists inwards which I think if I am reading correctly, is too wide. I can never feel comfortable in the drops. hencei I’ve dropped my width at the drops from 40 cm to 32 cm. 99% of the time, I am on the hoods. Havent had time to install the Hup cc handlebars yet but it’s not a flat top handlebar but rather a traditional handlebar.

Ive tried various bike to compare my allez sprint with and I keep feeling that mine is quicker due to the narrow handlebars. above 35km/hr it just glides. comparing this to a scott foil, spesh roubaix (which is supposed to be faster than the V1 allez sprint disc), a chapter 2 rere and a factor o2, apart from the foil, the rest does not come close at the ability to maintain the same speed. the riding buddy that I swapped bikes with says the same so take it with a pinch of salt with a sample size of 2.

Just picked up some FSA Energy Super Compact which are 36 at the drops and 34.5 at the hoods - Alloy with flat tops as well as very shallow drops and short reach. Not the easiest to find but they’re available some places.

I think that the Speeco offer a narrow handlebar as well… super expensive though

oh wow, Have heard of the brand but didn’t know they make custom ones. pretty cool that anyone can make any type of handlebars they want provided that they are willing to pay. thanks for this!

pretty sure if they were to make 30 - 32 cm handlebars it would be flying off the shelves.

PRO Handlebar PLT Compact Roadbike 31,8 mm 36 cm
You can add this one to your list. Available from r2 for 35€.

Thanks for the list.

I agree that the narrow bars make a noticeable difference.

What I’m curious is what bars are the narrowest that meet the UCI requirements: presumably 35cm outside to outside in the drops?

EDIT: Confirmed Fouriers 320mm bars are 354mm 0-0 at drops!

I am enjoying this thread, I think I might bite on some narrow bars soon (currently on 40 C-C width, 71R, 118D). I love the bars im on and just wonder what doing more narrow would be like.

While reading this thread I remembered that Nextie has a source on bars similar or knocked off of the Speeco. I have tons of Nextie products, they are pretty good but anyway they are significantly cheaper for anyone wanting to try a bar like that out.

the narrowest bar I found on their homepage seems to be the monstrosity you linked above :joy: 40mm with a reach of a 70mm stem + 311mm so essentially giving you + 38cm of reach. What kind of bike do you put this thing on, a kids bike? Have fun hitting your knees into that thing. Or maybe I just don’t get it?

Ha!

I have no idea, but just remembered seeing it was all haha. I am actually curious to see a first hand user talk about it.

They look to be based on the Speeco bars
