Gravel Tire Recommendations

I won’t run anything but gravel king sk.

Tubeless only.

Re: g-ones

How’s this tire shedding mud ? Looks like it might struggle in wetter conditions. I’m running rambler currently in a 40 - great traction but I think a bit slower rolling than say a gravel king on pavement. Was going to go GK in a 35 this season but might consider this tire too.

I’ve also ridden and raced G-One. I started with the All-round, but moved to the Bite (both at 38 and tubeless.). The All-round just worn down to slicks too quickly for my mixed road/gravel rides. The Bite are more aggressive on the sides in particular, but they role pretty well still. They’re a bit taller in center tread so I’m seeing better mileage out of them without a huge rolling penalty.

I agree with your assessment on the gravel kings. I know everybody seems to love them but I can’t say I feel like they handle the rougher conditions you describe particularly well. My new bike came with Maxxis Rambler 40mm. I have not ridden them enough in varied conditions to assess better or worse than the gravel kings. I will say that the 40mm Ramblers installed run much smaller than 40mm. I’m going to try out the WTB Resolute 42mm and see how they are.

I also found G-One to be a fast wearing tire, especially if a good chunk of your mileage involves paved roads. The same can be said for Gravel King SKs. I love both tires though, very fast, supple, and plenty of grip on most gravel. I’m putting a set of Gravel King 43c on my newest build.

I have heard great things about WTB Nanos. The continuous center line is a really nice bonus and offers up good longevity where a tire with micro-knobs like a G-One or Gravel King SK wears fast.

I’ve got one wheelset with 650b x47 WTB Sendero tires for MTB-like conditions and just put some 700x40 WTB Byways on another wheelset for everything else. I did have some Gravelking Slick 700x35 on previously, really like them, too.

Hi All, i’m new to gravel and got a giant revolt a couple months ago that came equipped with Giant Crosscut AT 1, 700x38 tubeless. I’ve already done a few rides and its been ok but i’m having a hard time to figure out which pressure to use since tire side-wall says i should use between 50-75psi but I’m not sure if that’s right for tubeless(On my TT bike i run GP5k tubeless with 65-70psi) and i can’t find too much information online about these tires.

On the flip side, i’ve done some tests with different pressure and anything around 40psi feels really low&slow so i’m thinking if i shouldn’t run slitghly higher pressures.

Does anyone have experience with this particular tire? How do you like them? What pressure are you running?

I’m 6ft tall and ~170lbs.

I’m not familiar with any Giant tires but if they are tubeless and going on tubeless wheels I wouldn’t be concerned about the 50-70 psi on the sidewall.

I weigh a lot more than you and run my Gravelking SK 38mm around 38-40 front and 42-45 rear.

If the Giant is a stiff carcass it can be difficult to have it feel good at a lower pressure.

When you tried it at 40 psi was it really “squishy” or was it just smoother which can feel slower if you are newer to it?

No experience with that particular tire but your pressures are higher than I would run. All depends on surface though. Feeling slow and being slow aren’t actually the same.

Enve has a good chart that has been pretty consistent with my experiences.

Worth looking at and using a starting point and experimenting from there.

Squishy… i guess this is a way to describe it. Yesterday i did 60mile ride on mixed terrain and kept looking to the rear tire because it didn’t feel right. I checked pressure at the end of the ride and they were at 40psi.

I’m familiar to this chart. I have a pair of 7.8’s mounted with GP5ks Tubeless on my TT bike and I used it to fine tune the tire pressure on that bike but it is not really working for my gravel wheels. Maybe because of different rim width.

edit: I was able to find online that the wheels i’m running have a rim width of 19mm so the closest comparison would be the M50 that has 21mm.

I would just bump up a 1 or 2 psi from 40 then on each ride. You’ll find that sweet spot.

I have Maxxis Rambler 40c on my Aspero, they are light and super comfortable! I feel like in dirt they really come alive and are super fast.

G one is WAY harder to get on the rim than a Gravel King SK in my experience. Maybe try Maxxis Ramblers or Specialized. Both nice tires and easy to seat up tubeless and get on and off in my experience.

Hi All, just to feedback from my side. I played around with different pressures and the tire never felt right.
During a visit to a LBS the bike technician gave me a reality check that i wasn’t really running the best tires around so i decided to try something different and got the Gravelkings SK.

I had a hard time getting it on my wheel and properly sealing so instalation was a bit of pain but the ride today was something else. For the first time i felt i was really riding properly and i’m really happy with the performance. I did have a flat, probably because of over inflation but i plugged it and carried on for 20miles with no issues.

Has anyone tried IRC tires? The broken tubeless tire seems intriguing but the 40c is almost 500g.

What tire were you running?

I’ve been running specialized sawtooth on my bike they work well for where I ride with a good mix of gravel and tarmac without too much wear to the tire. They are a little Tokyo drift like when there is light dirt over hardpack but got used to it pretty quick

Stock Giant Crosscut AT 1, 700x38 that came with my bike(Giant Revolt).

This has turned into a pretty large discussion, so please forgive me if this has been discussed a lot already.

I’m looking for a 700c x 40 tubeless tire, I could run wider up front.

what’s everyone’s recommendation for someone like me, 80% pavement riding with the random 20% gravel and light trail thrown in?

Has any one tried a true high volume slick tire like a Maxxis Velocita, or WTB Byway? How much of a trade off is there on gravel? I’m currently running WTB Ventures and they are very slow on pavement, I’ve also already cut them (second ride) and not loving how they pick up road debris. I do like them on smooth gravel which is what I seek out most of the time but the trade off on the road is too much for me. It feels like I’m on my mtb on the road.

Thanks!
