Gravel race tires 2024

Best gravel option at 700c 50mm/29x2.0?
2019 Trek checkpoint ALR5 (57.7mm clearance rear). Looking for a fast roller for East coast gravel/rocky

Continental
Race king 2.0- shieldwall compound
Terra trail 50mm shieldwall compound- measured 48mm
Cross King 2.0- shieldwall compound

Vittoria Terreno Zero 50mm
Vittoria Terreno Dry 50m

Panaracer GravelKing SK/SK+ 50mm

Schwalbe g-One Speed 50mm
Schwalbe G-One Bite 2.0

Pirelli Cinturato Gravel H 50mm

Exceptions:

  • Tufo Thundero 48mm measures 46mm BRR- too small
  • Schwalbe Thunder Burt 2.1- 50mm@carcass but 52mm@Thread. Too Big(probably?)

It was like 10% tongue in cheek and 90% legit.
Would actually love to see this.

What’s the internal width of your rims? Thunderos are measuring 50.0 mm for me on 29mm internal rims.

I based my info on BRR testing.

BRR tests on pretty narrow rims, so tires almost always end up bigger than he measures. Also, he measures them fairly fresh, and they will likely stretch some over time

What’s your recommendation for a 50mm tire? @Andrewbn42

I’d skip the Continental Shieldwall tires. They test slower than the larger ProTection versions (Race King as an example below).

I’m still in the honeymoon phase with the 700x48 Thunderos but they’re great so far. BRR measured them at 45.6mm on a 17.8mm internal rim. They’d probably be true to size after settling in on a ~24mm internal rim (given they’re 50mm for me).

I’m a bad resource on that front. My bike is absolutely maxed at 45.
I would look at a terra hardpack or the thunder 48 or pathfinder 47

Are you asking about a specific tire, or just in general? BRR has tested a wide variety of tires, including some different versions of the same tire. Generally speaking, anything that makes the sidewall tougher is also going to make it less flexible, which will increase Crr.

Really wanted to check these out, but just can’t find them anywhere…and time is getting short before Unbound, so just went with Pathfinder 47’s.

Don’t forget the BRR test rim is 17.8mm wide, so factor that in.

I have the 48 Thunderos and they’re 49-50 on 24mm iw rims. The 2.1 Thunder Burt is 54-55.

Have you looked at the Continental Terra Hardpack? Tests well at BRR. I wanted to try this one but ended up happy with the Thundero.

I’m in the US and ended up ordering them from Germany. Got some hard to find Conti tires too…prices were great even with $30 shipping. Just figured I’d mention it!

Oh sure…after I already have my Pathfinders in the house.

50mm is okay, but just 2mm more is too big?

I did a short test on some ThunderBurt 2.1s. They were interesting. The heavier weight (compared to Tufo 40s) was a little slower to accelerate, but once spinning, the flywheel effect was noticeable. They just want to keep rolling, and they felt faster than I expected on pavement. In the dirt, I found myself being less picky and cautious (meaning slow) about my lines though rough spots. As discussed earlier in this thread, the additional width does come with an aero penalty. Unfortunately, the TBs were too tight a fit on my bike for them to be a reasonable option. I doubt I would use them for racing, but it would have been fun to have them on a second set of wheels for some gnarlier local rides.

I’m very curious about Thundero 48s. Remember that BRR uses 17.8mm internal rims, which makes a lot of tires measure smaller than the sticker width.

Unfortunately 45s require clicking Notify Me button

BTD looks to have the 700x48 HD coming later this month. Doesn’t look like they have the regular ones. It’s nice to get them closer to $35 before shipping from Germany though

Yes, the conti’s are on my considerations:
Continental
Race king 2.0- shieldwall compound
Terra trail 50mm shieldwall compound- measured 48mm
Cross King 2.0- shieldwall compound

Vittoria Terreno Zero 50mm
Vittoria Terreno Dry 50m

Panaracer GravelKing SK/SK+ 50mm

Schwalbe g-One Speed 50mm
Schwalbe G-One Bite 2.0

Pirelli Cinturato Gravel H 50mm

57.7mm on my rear triangle clearance. I’m running stock wheels @ 19mm internal I think? (Spending on good tires>good rims), I would try the thunder Burt’s but I would hate to order for them not to fit.

I wouldn’t. Big tires deform more, particularly on narrower rims, so I think you’d be at reasonable risk of tire rub while actually riding

Conti Shieldwall Terra Hardpack 50 Vs Thundero 48mm.
Width tested 48mm vs 46mm.
BRR 28psi 18.6W vs 31 psi 18.5 W

I think based on this I’d rather the Terra Hardpack, despite there being a better conti compound?
Dream tire would be a 50mm or a 29x2.0 Protection conti

The Vitorria tires test slow, the pirelli’s are decent, but even then the conti’s test faster still. SO Conti Shieldwall?
