The “odd choice” was having a HB that could not be swapped out.

Don’t get me wrong, I do love flare. The issue here is that the flare is based on a 42cm bar which is more than wide enough for my liking.

I’d guess it’s the electronics. Likely they don’t want support calls from folks who tried swapping bars. Maybe there’s even an outlet in the bar to allow cables through to the levers. That would have the benefit of protecting the electronics from sweat or other incidental damage, at the cost of making the bars not interchangeable.
I’d just been looking at this again as it’s available in Switzerland, unlike the Zwift Ride since Zwift doesn’t distribute here. But still no real reviews seem to exist since Eurobike.
EDIT: Looking at the elite website the setup video seems to show there’s no wires in the headset and I also don’t see any particular reason the handlebars couldn’t be swapped unless the shift levers are somehow fixed to the handlebars.

I’ve got one, my mate has a direct account with Elite as he runs a cycle centre, so we both ordered one. I’ve only used it a couple of times because it’s summer, but it seemed to work fine. It’s super quiet and easy to set up and adjust the fit to other users.
The app is pretty rubbish though and the amount of buttons confuse me. I used it with Zwift with my Kickr v5 and it worked okay, but the gradient changes aren’t the smoothest and it’s hard to know what ‘gear’ you’re in. I keep checking the ‘upgrado’ app expecting that surely a new product will have a firmware update out by now, but nothing. I think it has a lot of promise but I can’t help but feel Elite have already forgotten about it and it’s only just been released!

What year is this? The Square initially had me very excited, and the more I learn about it, the more “small” oversights just make it an unattractive product (e. g. not being able to mount your own handlebars and now the quick release). The more I think about it, the better the Caveworks Rivet seems as a product: a simple-to-understand products which accepts standard bike parts whenever possible. And the few exceptions where it doesn’t (the stem), it makes sense.
Maybe that’s why at least one Elite trainer has a drawer for the bits and bobs now …
