Those fizik’s were my #1 choice as they are just beautiful but I couldn’t find my size. You have great taste!
I had a pair of cheap velcro guys for a couple of years and upgraded to Giro ACC last xmas, they’ve been awseome. Huge upgrade
Thanks! Yeah I sort of lucked out. They had a sale on Fizik and I think these might have been the only pair left they had on the website. Must have been meant to be.
What shoes are you riding now?
Sworks 7. I also lucked out and found them in my size at local bike shop in red/black which matches my bike!
BONT cycling shoes fit me well, can be exxy though. I have Vaypor+ and Vaypor S atm, the +s are pretty worn out though
Also SWorks. I have SWorks XC for CX, 3rd pair of em, and SWorks Sub6 for my super fast TT shoes, no BOAs sticking out in the wind!
Anyone tested DMT KM1 or KM3? How are they?
Does anyone have feedback on the latest generation Giro Empire SLX? Either the lace up or BOA, mainly wondering how flimsy the upper is compared to the previous Empire?
I’ve got the two boa mtb ones. Thumbs down.
- the knit upper doesn’t have any support to enforce space, so your toes get scrunched up and the sides of your foot get pinched. The shoe if very narrow and the size increments don’t add a lot of width. I think your feet are supposed to wider than the apparent width, but it doesn’t work out like that.
- the insole is very thin and the sole if very curved, so your feet get beat up. If you loosen the shoes, your feet move around and get beat up, if you tighten them you get squeezed.
- They are hard to clean. Dirt gets in the knit and you need to powerwash it out. ’
- You can’t just slide your feet in because the knit material grabs your sock and scrunches up your feet.
I gave up on them. They’re great for an hour, but not more than that. Are you size 44?
SWorks Sub6 are very nice, i use them for racing (road & TT) as without the boas sticking out they are definitely more aero
My normal everyday shoes are BONT Vaypors. Have a pair of Vaypor S and another Vaypor plus. Both very comfy. Probably prefer Vaypor plus
I have the latest gen SLX lace-ups and they are extremely light uppers, I’m not sure if flimsy is the word I’d use. They’re just soft (but toe is formed and more solid) rip-stop kind of material and the air flows through really well.
Compared to the previous gen (with the more “rubber” style upper), the new ones are thinner and more pliable.
Got Lake CX238 wide recently. My first proper pair of bike shoes - before that it was a Pearl Izumi model that was far too narrow and made my toes go numb after 90 minutes or so. I’m very pleased with them so far; the width is great, especially in the toebox, and the carbon sole is a noticeable difference from my previous shoes. One quibble is that they are about a millimeter too wide to have comfortable clearance of my crank and frame. If I turn my heels in at all (which the float in my pedals allows me to do), they rub slightly. Not the biggest deal at the moment but might have consequences down the line.
Thanks for the feedback, would you go as far as saying they’re not a very supportive material? Or all fine once laced up tight?
I mean, they’re not going to be supportive or protective like you’re wearing a pair of hiking boots. The upper is soft and flexible and they feel more like a glove than a cardboard box. As long as you tie your laces, they’ll keep your foot attached to the sole.
In the meantime, I have ordered DMT KM3 for myself and tried them out. They did not work for me either!
Very breathable and well made, but I could not go more than an hour with them - foot pain. Different insoles have brought no improvement.
Spend money on shoes because they are your primary point of contact. Don’t skimp on the pedals (dependent on brand, but tiers for pedals are normally weight driven; no tangible differences for the commuter). To begin, go to your local retailer; they may offer old stock from lesser-known names. Otherwise, Shimano is the way to go, according to this guide.
Is it just me or does that link to dirt bike boot reviews? They might be a bit heavy for road racing and I’m not sure they would be SPD-SL compatible. But they sure would handle a crash well.
I usually buy the tier below the top tier. I think you get the best bang for your buck there and make very little compromise in quality. It usually nets out to around $200 or so per shoe, but you can find some deals on older models sometimes. I also bought a pair of sworks mountain biking shoes that retail for $400 off facebook for $100 because the bottoms were scratched from gravel. It’s a mtb shoe so that’s unavoidable and they were barely used. Might sound wierd to wear someone elses shoes, but that was too good a deal.
Sorry to hijack…is it generally considered weird to buy used shoes? I have a pair that have been worn for maybe 5 hours and was thinking of selling because they’re just not right for me and I can’t return.
My wife it a thrift shop master and she buys used stuff all the time.
I don’t know. I don’t think so because obviously I bought some and those aren’t the only used shoes I’ve bought. But some might not like the idea of someone else’s stinky shoes. I’ve tried to sell some shoes myself without as much luck.
I bought a pair of S-Works Sub 6 used on eBay. They looked like they’d never been worn. I’d buy another pair of S-Works 6 if I saw them in my size and looked only lightly used.
