Big Sugar Gravel 2022

Curious on your thoughts on the difficulty of Big Sugar 100 vs SBT GRVL Black? I did Big Sugar 100 in Oct’22 and am currently signed up for SBT GRVL Black.

Hmmm…pretty different races, overall and I approached them both very differently, so it is kinda hard to compare.

SBT I rode much more conservatively due to the elevation, while at Big Sugar, I was pushing the pace more (even though I eventually blew up). So my TSS and IF at Big Sugar was higher, despite it being shorter and with less elevation gain.

Leaving altitude out of it, the climbs are very different…as you know from last year, BS is a lot of constant up and down on short, punchy stuff, while the climbs in SBT are sustained efforts. The gravel in SBT is also MUCH nicer…there is a reason they call it champagne gravel. I rode 38’s in SBT while I had 45’s for Big Sugar.

I guess I would rate SBT as a bit harder simply because of the added distance, elevation gain and being at altitude…but I definitely raced much harder at Big Sugar.

I’ll be back out at SBT again this year, as well. It is a great event…

I did the 100 this year and ran Perrlli Centurato 45 mm RC gravel tires with Tubolito tubes. I packed 4 extra tubes anticipating flats but had none. I was impressed with the performance of the tire. I ran 40 PSI in the rear and 38 in the front.
