This has been discussed in the past…. But I can’t find an explanation.

I complete a workout “successfully” with the predicted RPE.

After the workout the AI FTP prediction calculates a new number (or keeps the previous one)

The next day is a rest day.

On that rest day I load TR to check my workout for the next day….

The AI FTP prediction “recalculates” and now shows a different number from the day before.

I find this happens regularly.

Thanks for any insight

Chris

If you didn’t have anything scheduled that day, and you did what was prescribed the day before and nothing else, your prediction shouldn’t change on an off day.

If that has happened, could you share the dates so I can take a closer look?

Hi Eddie

Thanks for your super quick reply. On reflection I should have said this has happened occasionally rather than regularly., apologies. I also wish I had more of a paper trail to show you examples.

I have attached one occasion where as far as I can see my FTP prediction altered on an off day. You can see the date and time at the top left on the screen grabs.

 ![TR AIFTP Change Example A](https://global.discourse-cdn.com/trainerroad/original/3X/d/8/d8cd8c8a696ea441e553b5a4d777280c524a080f.jpeg)

I also thought I saw the same pattern this week ( I didn’t manage to grab any screenshots so I may be wrong ) I am pretty sure after my Monday 22nd June Outside workout my AIFTP prediction recalculated to 249 W. When I checked in on my TR app yesterday I saw the recalculation progress bar and my new value was 248 W.

I have set my profile to Public if that helps.

If you don’t mind can I ask you another question?

I successfully completed an indoor workout this morning rating it with the most likely RPE and my AIFTP Prediction went from 248 W to 246 W. Do I have to assume this is HR related?

Thanks in advance

Cheers Chris B

It looks like that initial drop down from 249 to 248 on the 23rd was because TR recalculated your prediction after confirming that the planned workout on the 22nd wasn’t going to get done.

I’m going to dig into this a bit further, though, and I’ll follow up when I have something else to share.

I took another look, and it seems like the change last week was likely from your survey response attached to the Ohio workout. I think we predicted that to be moderate, and you said it was hard.

A belated update on this thread with an example of my AI FTP prediction changing on rest days..

Sticking to my training plan on 22 September I completed Glennamong as prescribed, AI FTP prediction recalculated and gave me a value of 246 W.

 ![IMG_1935](https://global.discourse-cdn.com/trainerroad/original/3X/1/4/140de91ba5242416dfebeca7f43d3163761d2c4f.jpeg)

On 25th September I launched TR in readiness for my next workout ( Pioneer -3 ) and AI FTP prediction recalculated… giving a new value of 247 W.

 ![IMG_1937](https://global.discourse-cdn.com/trainerroad/original/3X/4/0/4098c352f64e005d97d84b4b801ba3d8d15ef848.png)

Another similar head scratcher occurred today , having completed my easy Endurance Pioneer -3 on Friday “as prescribed” I got an AI FTP recalculation as expected , no change , 247 W. Today I checked before my workout which I’ll do later and the AI FTP recalculated back down to 246 W (no screenshots on this example ).

I appreciate the recalculations aren’t extreme changes , but they’re a bit disconcerting especially when you’re very near the end of a training plan.

Cheers, Chris

To be fair, the difference between 246W and 247W is negligible, but still interesting that AI FTP Prediction would be recalculated in these cases.

This is good feedback!

I think that most of us are sensitive to FTP changes, so maybe we should wait until there is more than a 1-watt difference in change before letting you know.

Stuff like this tends to get in our heads and become distracting (especially when it’s a 1-watt drop..

also really behind the scenes it could have been less! Could have been 246.6w and recalculated down to 246.4 🙂

However beyond the small drop and they why tho?!
bigger question on TR’s side
Seems to me that server processing time and costs… why recalculate the FTP day to day or hourly (or whatever the rate is) … if there has been no change of state? it called for no activity to happen for 24+hrs… no activity and subsequent analysis was needed… why recalculate projected FTP?
Interesting choice to have time change alone trigger FTP projections for EVERY USER utilizing aiFTP? Or maybe it is that everytime the AI model is updated… it then updates every user? (presume ai update is also on a schedule of some sort… so indirectly it updates all on a schedule).

It’s my thought that if it’s saying “ in 28 days” that every day it’s going to change based on the 28 upcoming workouts. This might be one explanation.

What I find interesting (in this recalculating often context), I was curious so I did a screen shot of my Thursday workout predicted difficulty on Tuesday night, also on Wednesday morning after downgrading my planned Run from 40min to 20min… and also Wednesday night after adding in a 45min strength session and 25min Sauna… also looked this morning at Thursday workout… the predicted difficulty % for hard and very hard didn’t change at all during this sequence of reducing and adding additional workouts.

I would think that with less or more TSS before a hard workout… that predicted difficulty would change (just like the projected FTP)? With more or less freshness - that definitley changes my chance of rating a workout Hard vs Very Hard… (or failing!)
