Returning to training after a break. Read a lot of (but not all) threads on the new ai release. Haven’t seen this aspect discussed. If I missed it, please point me to it.
Seems to me that if we’re measuring effectiveness of base training by “how much does this improve ftp RIGHT NOW" its effectively turning the base phase into more build phases. If every month you try to maximize whatever makes ftp the highest, you’re just chasing a local minimum.
Whereas if you instead predicted how much your base training would improve your build phase, the model could let you build a bigger base now, even if it means it takes longer for FTP to grow. With the payoff of a higher peak later in the season.
Or instead of predicting FTP at all, is that even the right metric to measure effective base improvements?

FTP prediction is just one feature in this release. I don’t believe that TR prescribes workouts during base phase with the primary goal of maximizing your next FTP prediction, but I’d love to be proven wrong.

I’m sure the system chooses different workouts based on phase. I’d be shocked if it didn’t. But we’ve been told things like: adjust your training approach, adjust volume, sometimes less is more, etc. The only metric we’re being provided to determine if changes to a plan are positive or not is predicted FTP.

I’ll agree with you there, but I’m not sure what to do about it besides disabling FTP prediction on your account. I’ve just come back to TR after not using it for several months so I don’t remember if there was a way to track progression besides PLs, but even now I’m reading that the whole progression level system wasn’t great either?
During base phase I’m more concerned about things like progressing time in zone for sweet spot, for example, I guess the only way to track this would be looking at workouts individually. If that’s the case, I can just as easily build workouts in intervals.icu and push them to zwift so I know exactly how they’re progressing from week to week.
