Weird behaviour after new AI update

Hi all,

I got the new AI update just now. I see a massive drop from earlier FTP detection (last week) of 272 down to 253W. I still went with it because let’s give the new system a chance. And I read the pinned forum post about the update that this can happen. (I wonder if it is because TR never prescribes anything else than vo2max and endurance to me, It never tells me sweet spot or threshold)

But now it plans a yellow day after a super chill endurance day… replacing the original vo2max with another endurance day….

I end up with only endurance days now….

This doesn’t seem to work at all?

Reduce Sunday (which appears to be the main kicker for carrying too much load into the week), if that is not possible, drop or reduce the duration of Tuesday and see how it adapts.

Maybe change from Moderate to Balanced and see what happens …

You could also try swapping some days round if that’s viable? Swap your intense Wednesday ride to Tuesday, Friday or Saturday and see what impact that has.

It would be helpful to share your intended plan structure, as well as past month and next month from the web view as it will help people pick out what’s going wrong, this is definitely not working as intended, but there’s probably a simple enough reason for that

Thanks all, but I don’t want to make changes to my calendar just to fix something that appears broken in TR. This has worked fine for months, it’s only doing this weird stuff since the last update.

@pirnie Wrt sharing my past month and training structure, how would I best do that?

Screenshots from the web view of the calendar is probably easiest.

This isn’t my perception of what I’m seeing here. Just because it worked fine, doesn’t mean you couldn’t have trained more effectively with the time you have available. I’d view this as the new model picking up restrictions/deficiencies in your scheduling that the old model wasn’t making you aware of. It’s then adapting as best it can, based on what you have scheduled.

I was part of the beta for a good while before it released and saw similar things in my training. By swapping my Saturday and Sunday workouts I was able to get in a good bit of exta TSS without triggering a yellow day - this played out in reality over a couple of months too. The old plan scheduler was a very fixed mindset way of planning training; I find the new AI lets you optimise your own schedule around its realistic impact much better. Personally, I wouldn’t be afraid of having a play. You may be pleasantly surprised by the results.

If you really don’t want to change the schedule, just override the yellow day by pressing on the VO2 box above the workout to get your previous workout back!

I may not have expressed myself correctly: In my schedule i always have the hard outdoor ride on sundays (i cant move that due to private life schedule). For that reason I dont do a training on monday (which it usually also correctly flags as red or yellow). then i planned an easy workout on tuesday (which it always plans as an endurance ride, so thats fine), and on wednesday i do a hard workout. sometimes i move that to thursday, depending on my work schedule during theh week. I have never had any trouble doing the tuesday easy workout and then the wednesday hard workout.

But now, since the latest update, every single hard workout on the wednesday is replaced with an endurance one. it seems to completely underestimate what i am able to do.

Another example is that 7th of february: why on earth would that have to be a yellow day…

This is how the plan looks now, that must be wrong right?

It looks logical to me. What I’m seeing here is that the AI thinks that the additional fatigue from your endurance work on Tuesday means that doing an intense workout on Wednesday won’t be productive. While endurance rides are easy the accumulated fatigue will impact you the following day. You have a few options:

  • If you think the AI is underestimating your abilities ignore the AI and keep doing what you have been, you don’t have to accept its recommendations - click the icon that says VO2 max above the Wednesday ride and swap it back to VO2 max workouts. If you’re right and you end up finding those workouts easier than the AI expects it should learn and stop indicating those as yellow days
  • Try doing the VO2 workouts on Tuesday and endurance work on Wednesday - drag them onto the other days and see what kind of workouts it gives you
  • Move the VO2 workouts to Thursday avoid them being on the yellow day entirely and give you max recovery before your main productive workout of the week

Ultimately you’re not being forced to do anything by the AI, if you feel it’s not a fair representation of what you can do, you can override it and if you’re right, it should learn.

I think your particular case is not being helped by what looks like a bit of a training gap in December/Early Jan - no judgement, my calendar looks the same, but it’s probably making the system a bit more sensitive to yellow days as your training ramps back up to stop you overcooking yourself. It should calm down once your training stabilises too

Remember that it doesn’t actually know how hard that “hard” ride on Sunday is at the moment. I wouldn’t be surprised if after you have actually done that ride the yellow day on Wednesday disappears.

If not you can select the tab above your reduced workout and switch back to the original.

A very good point

Your final option, after trying the suggestions from @pirnie and @kevistraining, is to turn off Fatigue Detection in settings. You will still see yellow (and red) days displayed in your calendar, but the AI won’t change any workouts due to them.

Thanks guys, much appreciated, I’ll go play around with all the suggestions above!

How are things looking now?

I overruled all the workouts by doing the Vo2max and the higher level and longer endurance ride, also did the hard ride outdoors on sunday, but nothing seems to change:

It’s still predicting yellow days after the endurance ride on tuesdays and next week and week after it puts another yellow day on the saturdays after only endurance workouts are scheduled for the week. It doesnt really make sense to me. What I mostly dont understand is the combination of dropping the FTP by 20W AND lowering all the workouts to endurance. I would expect it to do either of the 2, not both

I have to travel for work this week so that will mess up my calendar, ill have it recalculate when i return end of the week, maybe that changes things.

I think this may have been mentioned before, but I think this is likely from your two-hour-long “hard rides” on Sundays. Are those actually hard rides, or are those supposed to be long endurance rides? That might make a major difference here..

Riding the day after a red day is likely triggering those yellow days on Wednesday, too.

Let me know your thoughts, but that’s likely what’s happening here.

Yeah thats why i planned the monday to have no training and the tuesday to always be an easy ride. Those are intense MTB rides so not coffee-rides. they are usually 2:00 to 3:30 long and i would defnitely rate them hard on the resume. But i cannot really imagine that doing one ride like that on sunday would mean i cannot do a single training during the week anymore besides endurance rides like the tool now suggested.

Anyway, i requested support to have a look at it and something seemed off indeed. He or she has made some changes “ behind the scenes” and now i do get a more realistic training plan with threshold and Vo2max trainings during the week. Unfortunately they also removed my weekly outdoor sunday ride.

I think TR AI just isnt very good at correctly calculating with those planned outdoor rides, so i will leave them out of the plan, ride them like i always do and then let TR calculate reactively what impact it has on the week after. will see over the next couple of weeks how that works out

Remember that “moderate” makes RL/GL quite sensitive. I think that TR is overly conservative about how they set up the training approach based on past criticisms. Give balanced a try. It doesn’t mean that you have to go hard if there’s no color on that day.
