Anyone fancy having a go at the new velomobile 24hr world record? Aerodynamics for the win.
Does it have to be Velomobile? Because I’m sure there’s some more aerodynamic 'bents out there. Is there an overall HPV 24hr record? I’ve done >800k/24h on a TT bike on open roads in the UK few years ago now and have also race a Greenspeed 'bent in Oz during a team 24hr many years ago so I wonder what I’d be able to do if I trained specifically on the 'bent. Not that I’m going to try, mind.

Well there are streamliners (recumbent bicycle fully faired) which are faster. For instance the standing start kilometre record is 79 mph / 128km/h. But they are not as stable in the wind, and whether someone could manage to keep upright over 24 hours and still having moving resupply at those speeds (and higher as that is average speed over the km) is debatable.
But in answer, you can ride anything to try and get the record as long as fully human powered.

Well he maintained it for 24 hours with very little downtime. I think it reasonable to assume that with the state of the art velomobile he was riding that the power to hit 39 mph is somewhere in the range 200-250W and no higher. The far far shorter 1km record is 79 mph , 128 km/h , which is 28 seconds. What would the power output be for a decent amateur for 28 seconds? That puts an upper limit on power required to average 79 mph for 28 seconds, starting from a standstill.
