+1 to Optimizing position then training in that position. Wise words
I was thinking about this some more while riding my bike this morning. Whatever you end up doing, do NOT make it back to back to back build blocks in a row. This will break you physically and mentally.
Thanks, all! Appreciate all the input!
@matthewgreer - I’ve taken off about 5-6 weeks in the last 24 months or so. Usually a week or less, but 3 weeks post IMLP. Good point about the SSB!
@JoeX - Thanks for the suggestion. Sweet Spot Base and Sustained Power Build. Interestingly the HV70.3 has a lot of this, too.
@TG333 - I train the same way I race. Almost always in aero position. Had a professional bike fit last year. Still rocking a entry level road bike, adjusted for tri. Will try to get a Cervelo P3 once I feel the bike is my limiting factor. I could also lose a few pounds, but hard to lose weight and train 10hrs a week!
Did better than me……
Crash on bike after about 20mins
Someone drifted right as I was passing them and they put me into a cone.
Smashed aerobars, knee and ribs. Back to T1 in an ambulance.
I was already fairly drunk by the time the pros started the run in town……
Ah man that’s tough. Heal fast.
I think I saw someone who’d hit a cone so that could have been you?
Ben dnf’d on the run too, so did anyone from this forum finish??
I did 70.3 Wisconsin the day before. Saturday was an awesome day for a race. Clear and mostly cool. We knew the weather was going to turn Saturday night. When I woke up Sunday morning and looked out my hotel window I thought “I feel sorry for anyone doing IM Wisconsin today”. It was a hard steady rain and around 55 degrees (F) all day! I couldn’t imagine a worse day to race. Listen to TTL’s (That Triathlon Life) podcast this week. Nick Goldston raced IM WI and gave a great (sad) recap of the race.
Probably was me…. Mangled giant trinity and a body lying on the floor next to it….
So disappointed, I was in my best ever IM shape after a massive focus on that race for this year.
Fairly confident I’d have gone under 10, swim apart, conditions were perfect for me (I like the heat but have a massive sweat rate).
Waiting to heal to see if I jump into Portugal or maybe Israel.
Sorry to hear had a bad day. Out of interest, did you swim in the sea prior to the race? Seems to be a few cases of people feeling bad.
No I didn’t swim before. My wife swam Saturday and didn’t feel great watching on Sunday. I’ve heard a few similar stories from others.
On a separate note. Did you see how far the slots rolled? I heard of cats rolling to 60-100th place! Has the allure of Kona died? Or are people priced out under current circumstances??
I didn’t go, obviously I didn’t have an interest in the award ceremony and had a raging hangover……
Head the same at kalmar but assumed that was because it was for this year. I would have assumed wales would have been in demand as normal give its 2023 Kona slots on offer.
I wonder if the big roll downs will be more likely in some of the female categories with the big increase in available slots now perhaps?
I swam Saturday, conditions were perfect….
I had a bit of a dodgy stomach on the Saturday evening but that isn’t really unusual for me tbh.
If anyone wants a laugh, my number is 1376 for IM Weymouth
Good luck!
@JoeX - Am I crazy or did the SSB plans go away? Seems in the build plans there are tri specific plans and then just Sustained Power Build, General Build and Short Power Build.
they are there, right below plan builder (first on the list in base)
I think that was mainly races towards the end of the qualifying period with Kona being so close, but definitely because of the costs and accommodation issues for this year. Ironman Canada was one of the first for 2023 and there was barely a slot given up and I think it was similar for races since.
I use the mobile app, they’re the first ones in the Base phase. Then yes, Build is a different choice.
Looks like a tough swim but safely through T1.
Thanks @JoeX and @MikeMckinney . Not sure why I didn’t think to look at base instead of build!
Well done @Mgalex
You bike splits kept coming up on my watch as I ran a steady Half Marathon and then the beginning of your run, it keep me going otherwise I might have called it at about 11 miles (as I was almost back home), but did a couple extra to virtually run with you in spirit.
How was the swim, was it choppy at all, was the tide helping or hindering, or not sure?
Well done again.
Well done @Mgalex
