Stress & Recovery after breaks in training and long car journeys

Every 4/5 weeks or so I have a 5 day break from any real cycling as I drive to visit family who live at opposite ends of the country. Each child lives about 6-8 hours away so the break is bookended by 2 long drives.Anybody who travels up and down the motorways in the UK, particularly in winter probably knows what a stressful experience it can be. My question is what is the best way to get back to training after these breaks. I’m in my early 60’s and am finding increasingly my legs seem to be shot after these lay offs. Any suggestions please. My average weekly TSS over the last few months is just under 600 mostly outside

Ease yourself back into it with some endurance rides. More importantly listen to you body and mind. Yes you were off the bike but it doesn’t mean you were recovering.

Take your bike and go for an easy spin once there (early next morning). I find that first ride (or run) after travelling usually horrendous, no power or fitness, but I’m much better for it the next day.
