I think there’s more people that are moving anti-shimano over this. Bringing more to sram in the long run.

Hammerhead is still a small part of the market in terms of computers. Makes you wonder if Shimano will do their own computer. Given the kerfuffle with the Pioneer stuff it doesn’t seem promising.

Kind of understand given SRAM are their only true direct competitor. But also a bit rough to users of their groupsets if they don’t make a HH competitor…

I don’t think it will be a huge factor for many new groupset users.

And they have tried bike computers in the past and they have been market flops…offering a “me too” product in a crowded market is not gonna move the needle, even if it has the Shimano name attached to it.

Completely agree. I don’t see the value in blocking a product you can’t/won’t bring an equivalent out for.

I know they don’t want to help SRAM, and probably SRAM has made life difficult for them in the past.

It’s just shithouse for existing users especially.

Ooooof…don’t you know it. SRAM is basically only in existence today because they sued Shimano and won over their OEM pricing policies back in the 90’s. At the time that case ended, SRAM was barely alive, basically a one-product company (Grip Shift) and struggling to get any spec.

That lawsuit brought in much needed funding and opened the door to a massive amount of OE spec.

Very, VERY few people are going to change their group set to keep their head unit. It would be FAR cheaper to buy a new Edge.

If I’m doing a new build a computer brand would be at the very bottom of the list of things that I would consider important when deciding between group sets.

This is some bs Shimano not allowing di2 info to the Karoo any more. With their supply issues you’d think they would be doing everything possible to keep customers happy

I wouldn’t buy a new computer over this. I rode for years and years without any of the shifting features on my computer since neither Di2 nor ETap were even invented yet. And it was no big deal. I can easily do it again. I wouldn’t give up the big advantages that my Karoo has over my former Edge just to get shifting features. It’s basically a don’t care for me.

Speaking for myself, I’ll pretty much always avoid buying from companies who make a practice of steering away from standards and compatibility. Shimano has a long history of anti-competitive practices in the bike industry, so this is also a nice reminder of the 90’s, as someone else mentioned above.

That’s very true, and that’s fine if this is as far as this goes (which I feel is a to far at as it is), until it get’s to the point where DI2 only fully works with a Shimano\Shimano company branded computer (after all Hammerhead are cut out as SRAM are a competitor, which as dcrainmaker points out, Wahoo and Garmin are also competitors as they make power meters), so where was I … yes your DI2 only works on your Shimano approved computer, and the only power meter that head unit recognizes … is a Shimano one, and your HR monitor has to be a Polar, because Garmin are a competitor,

Open standards have given us a lot in recent years, you can mix and match as you see fit, I’m not so keen for us to go back to where you have give that up

I was simply pointing out that for people who want a computer to work with their shifters, I thought it was far more likely they would buy a new computer than a new group set.

If Shimano thinks like that, and signs point to that they do, then that’s a narrow-minded view. SRAM is a much, much smaller company, and Shimano doesn’t sell head units. Even if they will in the future, I’d still see no reason to selectively block SRAM. SRAM doesn’t do the same when it comes to e. g. power meters. You can use a Quarq power meter with a Shimano groupset.

Companies shouldn’t punch down, especially when all that this accomplishes is punishing users.

Gotta agree. It’s a sh!t move by Shimano, but it won’t have me moving away from them. Way easier to ditch the Karoo than Di2. Not a fan of SRAM road groups. No way I’d even think twice about that decision, I’ll choose Shimano every day.

I don’t disagree, but I don’t think the Quarq analogy is correct.

It’d be more if they blocked Shimano PM from Hammerhead. I don’t think they would. And I think they’d have to change the signal being sent. What the heck do I know about that though lol.

Seems silly.

Given Shimano’s size, I wonder if this starts to tread into antitrust grounds. Would love a cycling crazed DOJ lawyer (if such a creature exists) to send Shimano a sternly written letter and request for information on this action. Maybe that would scare Shimano straight 😜

Perfect timing. Valuation/multiples have come down. Hammerhead doesn’t seem like they have the revenue to raise if they will need cash soon.

SRAM seems to have not been hit with supply chain issues. Good time for M&A. Put that cash to work.

Wonder what my training spreadsheets are worth? I’ll take 3x revenue. On second thought, maybe not.
