Hi all -
I’m new to Trainerroad and currently planning to do 12ish weeks of Base as prescribed (Base I → Base II → Base III). I just did Wright Peak -6 today (at roughly 96% FTP for the intervals) and it got me wondering if I’m better off getting into a Build/VO2 heavy phase and then going back to Base because TTE seems pretty solid. I don’t think my FTP is wildly off… maybe 5Ws maximum too low… but I am so bad at any work that is over FTP and it really shows in a Ramp Test.
I appreciate any advice in advance and fully aware I’m likely over thinking this as a new rider
Hey @jlar2107,
Welcome to the forum!
This is a great place to ask such a question.
Given that you don’t have any events on your calendar, I’d recommend sticking to the plan.
VO2 work is coming, and as a matter of fact, you’re going to be getting some in the Base 2 phase in just a couple of weeks.
It looks like you’re often using Workout Alternates to tackle some really hard workouts and are mostly able to get through them without too many issues. I’d just be a bit cautious when using Workout Alternates on workouts more than a day or two in the future because once you hand-pick a workout, Adaptive Training won’t suggest adaptations for that workout in the future.
It looks like today, tomorrow, and Friday’s workouts are all alternates which means that they won’t adapt based on your performance and progress moving forward.
Since you’re a new rider, I’d like to just mention that we’d highly recommend that you follow the plan during your rest week next week. You’ve been taking on a lot of stress lately and you need to give your body the time to turn that stress into adaptations.
Aside from that, things are looking really good! You’re crushing it for a “new” rider! Seriously! That workout today isn’t an easy one, but you got through it! Nice work!

This is really great feedback and I’ll plan to stick with Base! I didn’t realize that the adaptive training doesn’t work if I pick alternate workouts. Will Adaptive Training pick back up when I start Base II after my rest week? Or do I need to do anything to get that back on track?
Nope! AT will always be looking out for you – even during recovery weeks.
Workout Alternates is a great tool to use, so don’t be afraid to use it, but I’d recommend waiting until the day of to switch your workout to something else, just so that you can be sure of what AT is recommending to you for that day’s workout before you make your decision.

Yes that makes sense - I’ll do it day of going forward.
One other question… as I look at the Base II phase that is upcoming it looks like I have the same exact workouts prescribed each week. Is that normal and will adaptive training shift that as I go?
AT should adapt things once you enter that phase.
Let me know if it doesn’t!
