Returning User, Questions Answered and Advice Sought

After quite some time away, and reading quite a bit on the old interwebs about the shiny newness at TR, I thought I’d give it a try again. I signed up in the week and I’ve been trying to get my head around all of the changes (there’s a lot from the old static plans) and I’ve been trawling the forum for answers but I still have a bit of confusion so here goes.

FTP (Don’t roll your eyes please!)

On sign up there was a banner that said that TR defines FTP as the power you can sustain for approximately an hour and that they use this number to set your zones for training, on entering the newness I’m now being told (mainly by this forum) that that is incorrect and that the FTP number that is detected is something else, mainly for selecting workouts. I’m asking this not to flame but because I’ve used the PDC method of determining FTP and zones for quite a while now and it works very well for me, as long as I keep the PDC updated. At the moment both Intervals.icu and WKO5 have me at 250 and 248 respectively and I feel that in the ‘traditional’ sense that they are pretty much nailed on. TR has me at 263, which to me seems very high.

How will using the TR AI detection affect my workouts? I’m reading (and if I understand it) that this will mean shorter intervals but at a greater intensity? Do the intervals progress in length as each monthly FTP goes by, or do they reset at the new level? I’m envisaging a scenerio where I’m forever being prescribed say 3x9 threshold over/unders at increasing intensity rather than progress TiZ.

How will manually setting my FTP to 250 affect things, I’m thinking to do this for the first month and then see what the next AIFTP detection is after I’ve completed a few TR workouts at this level. Is this a good idea considering I’ve not done and rated a TR workout in quite some time?

Plan Builder

On trying to select an option to build a plan, I looked at the General Fitness options, but there is no guidance as to the differences or objectives of each option (at least any I could find) , is there a difference between building endurance for gravel than road? What’s the difference between improving climbing and building endurance? Am I missing something here?

Also, when I’ve been playing around with Plan Builder, it tells me I need 60mins on a Tuesday, but than once the plan is applied, it ups that to 90mins. That’s quite the increase, why isn’t this displayed during the set up process of the plan? Again, it could be me missing something, but I’m probably limited to 75-90minutes mid-week mornings indoors, due to balancing dragging myself out of a comfy bed and having to reluctantly go to work.

My Riding and Training

This one is entirely on myself and no fault of any system. I no longer race, so I don’t need (or want to anymore thankfully) peak for one specific event. In fact my riding these days is purely for personal challenge, enjoyment and fitness. I’m currently deep into a couple of Audax challenges, got several multiday trips planned for the summer and given it’s alledgedly Spring here in the UK and better weather incoming (honest!) my riding is quite variable, but will likely look like , one long ride per month 200km+ , a 100km two out of the three remaining weekends, hopefully a mid-week evening ride of a couple of hours to break the monotony of work up, but also this will help with a couple of the Audax points challenges and then there’s the bikepacking trips. So with all that, is PlanBuilder the best fit, or could I, should I just use the AI Workouts option , which looks to me like the most flexible, and populate my calendar that way? Any advice on how other longer distance riders use TR here would be very appreciated.

Thanks!

A lot of these questions could be answered if you schedule an Onboarding Call.

I’m not aware that they offer this service to UK users.

You’re correct. They reset to bring you to where a TH LV3 workout feels “Hard”. If you want to extend TIZ, either manually reset your FTP or ignore the AI one.

Okay, thanks for that. I think what might be behind the ‘inflated’ AIFTP is when I signed up, it told me it couldn’t detect my FTP and I was to schedule a ramp test, I actually rated my workouts for the past month or so and then the AIFTP detection popped up. I think I’ll stick with what I know for now and do a month of workouts and then see how it responds. Thanks again for your help.

I would try the AI FTP for a few weeks. If you rate rides “properly” in the post ride surveys, the AI will adapt pretty quickly if it set the wrong FTP. Many people have found that their previous FTP or normal, tested FTPs vary from the AI FTP. The AI FTP is there to help pick the right workout for the prescribed wattage the AI wants you to get. I’m sure TR hates seeing this, but it’s basically a TR specific workout level, rather than a “true” FTP.

After doing a ride, you can look at the power curves of the ride, and compare to your last 6 weeks/months/year/etc to see if ride asked you to do something way beyond your limits or not.

I used TR to prepare for bikepacking a couple of years ago. What worked for me was to pick the lowest possible volume for my plan, so that TR could give me intensity with enough room for endurance. I think I chose FTP as my goal. In any case, the plans are mostly similar in their base phases and start to deviate after that due to race specifics. You can see how the training phases look from the Training Plans main menu. Go there and click/tap on Training phases.

As far as FTP is concerned: yes, AIFTP is not exactly FTP. Yes, it will kind of reset every month, but the baseline is closer to 3x12 than 3x9. It’s done so for this reason:

You can turn automatic workout extension off from your settings if you don’t want this.

You can also decline your AIFTP or overwrite it with a manual one. You’ll always have the option to accept it again. Ultimately, the model that selects your workouts looks at watts. The FTP is more of a tuning value for TiZ vs intensity, the model will cope either way. Feel free to use whatever feels right. You will only have FTP prediction with AIFTP, if that matters to you.

FTP: in short, if the FTP is low you’ll get “harder" intervals. Longer for a given intensity. But the exact value doesn’t matter.

I would go with the intervals value to start - the AI is inaccurate until you’ve completed a number of workouts using the platform.

Your levels change throughout a month: so you get progressively harder workouts for the same FTP. When your FTP then goes up you’ll see that the workout levels go down slightly to compensate.

Plan builder: Each plan has slightly different workouts, tailored to the sport. So a gravel general might have slightly more Vo2 to account for punchy climbs. But in reality, the general build plans are essentially the same.

For the time. Are the workouts set to fixed or dynamic duration?

Your riding: it’s up to you really, but periodized training can be very useful even without events. Both approaches will work.

Thank you all for your replies, much appreciated. I’ve decided to go with my ‘existing’ FTP for this month, I’ve got ten days leave coming up and hopefully two 200km rides this month, one at the start and one at the end, so inbetween all that I’m going to use TrainNow and the AIWorkouts options to give the system better data and aquaint myself with how everything works, and then run the AIFTP detection and start a plan from there.

Once again, thanks for all the help.

They definitely do. I had one a few months ago when I rejoined TR. Very helpful.

Hey @Greased_Flea

I think an onboarding would be supper helpful, but please DM me with any additional questions so we can take a look at things together if you’d like.

FTP (Don’t roll your eyes please!)

This post from Nate will be supper helpful, but in short the workouts that you will get served will based on your power data. So even if you were to accept the AI FTP Detection or set it manually, like @Pbase, they reset to bring you to where a TH LV3 workout feels “Hard”. If you want to extend TIZ, either manually reset your FTP or ignore the AI one.

Plan Builder

The distinction between Building Endurance for gravel or road is more about the event type framing than a fundamentally different training stimulus.

For this bit:

it tells me I need 60mins on a Tuesday, but than once the plan is applied, it ups that to 90mins.

Looks like you may have it set to Dynamic. You can change it to fixed when building the plan.

My Riding and Training

I think in this case you may actually benefit from the Event/Race Based plans as you have already planned out Audax challenges! Adding them as Events in your Calendar will make it so that at least your training caters to them. Even if your training deviates, the AI Training Simulation window will adjust future workouts to keep you on track, so there is no harm in having a plan. I would say it’s the best of both worlds.
