I have had a suspicion for a while that my very cheap second hand direct drive trainer (Elite Suito T) was under reporting power…long story…wasnt too bothered as the workouts still felt right so it was just a number.
However just fitted a crank based power meter and did a ride that I logged on both and confirmed that the Suito was around 10% under reporting consistently accross all power ranges.
Due to this I have set the suito to use the on bike as its power meter, and performed a ramp test to set my values correctly on TR; a 10% increase in FTP.
the AIFTP is now set to the standard 28 days initially this was predicting a 4% drop. I did a VO2 ride straight after the test (was in high spirits) the AIFTP then adjusted to -2%. Am i right in thinking that this will adjust the more rides I do withint its expected parameters to show a positive value?
The closer you are to your FTP detection, the more accurate our prediction will be.
It’s kind of like a weather forecast. We can predict with some confidence what the weather will look like a week from now, but we’re much more confident in tomorrow’s weather.
In the case of FTP prediction, we’re predicting what your FTP will be a month from now, and there are many, many moving targets in that calculation, so while we may be really close if you follow your plan perfectly and everything goes 100% as expected, then the prediction will likely be pretty close.
Oftentimes, that’s not how life goes, though, and your prediction will update when it gets new data that it can use for a more accurate and updated prediction.
As you continue to use your new power meter, you’re adding in new data with that source of truth and phasing out old data from your Suito. Eventually, that data will be much less relevant as you use your new power meter more and more.
Same trainer, same experience. When the trainer was new, the Suito and my Quarq DZero were both agreeing with one another.
Now the Suito is underreporting. Both, the offset and the slope are different.
If you only ever use one power meter, then a consistently incorrect measurement will still give you good workouts. The only thing is that you cannot compare those power numbers in absolute terms with another power meter.
I personally use my Quarq DZero on my trainer as I simply want to have consistent power numbers indoors and outdoors.
