Yup…foot down / off course from a crash in front of you = free lap. You don’t have to be actively involved in the crash to get a free lap.

Used that a few times over the years…

Is this the same for crits run under British Cycling?

Is a “free lap” limited to one lap? If it takes you longer to sort your issue or recover than a single lap can it be two/three free laps before you rejoin or if you miss your chance after one free lap you cannot rejoin?

What is the rejoining procedure? Can you get up to speed before the pack comes past you?

I think BC stopped allowing laps out due to it be tactically abused.
