Pro Cycling 2025

Found this interview with UAE DS. Seems like the team screwed up in not telling Del Toro more insistently to change from the original plan (follow Carapaz) and chase Yates.

INTERVIEW WITH UAE DS FABIO BALDATO ABOUT 20TH GIRO STAGE:

“We certainly underestimated Simon [Yates] who was exceptional yesterday. The instructions were to always follow Carapaz, Isaac was good at responding and that’s also good. Simon was smart to go at his own pace and then to anticipate them by pitting one against the other.”

“Unfortunately it went like this. Of course when Simon started to gain 20-30 seconds, having Van Aert in front as a point of support, you were a little worried because Isaac remained on wheel of Carapaz and the two started to look at each other, you know. But in the meantime Simon in front was pushing.”

“When we got to the middle of the climb we tried to encourage him to also take Yates into consideration. We didn’t do it more than once, also because he’s the one on the bike, he knows his legs and his goal was to get to the top and go over the top with Carapaz. He preferred to save his strength towards the end. So, let’s say, in the end it was a decision that Isaac who made his choice by himself.”

“Anyway, it’s an important experience, a boy who was just 21 years old, it’s true, who loses the Giro, it seemed that he could do it by now, but he still arrives second, wins the white jersey, in short he’s a ready to be a champion. Yes, eh, if they had told us after a week that he was in second place, we would all have signed.”

“It hurts him, me, the team, everyone and with hindsight I can say: If I told him one more time “you have to go, you have to chase". Yes, the regrets remain. You know, now it’s easy to do the analyses and give the verdicts. He knew how much energy he had, the legs he had and above all one thing not to forget, young, as you said, it was the first time he found himself on a climb over 2000 m with the best climbers in the world.”

“Only 21 years old and already second in the Giro d’Italia, some will say lost, thrown away, that’s fine. And this is also part of the experience and it’s life and the bike, you fall, you get up and start again for the next race. Anyway, well, you start again with a second place in the Giro d’Italia, well, 21 years old is not bad, anyway. It’s true that we would have signed it before leaving. That’s fine.”

Yep, sack them both.

We’ve been really spoiled last few years by attacks from 60-80k out by Pog and MVDP that we think it happens all the time. But back in 2018 that move by Froome down almost 5 min was audacious. I can at least understand Dumoulin’s thinking and don’t forget at the time the thought process was shaped by the Sky defensive trains of winning the tours for almost a decade. Dumoulin thinking “this guy is going solo 80k out?!! He will burn himself out. There is no way he can take 5 min on me solo!”

This race was different. It’s less than 20k to go and he is down 1:30 with the greatest domestique of all time up the road waiting for him. You cannot give him more than 20s leash. And even if he would have lost, what people are disappointed by is the lack of effort to defend the jersey. Champions don’t let that happen. Froome, Nibali, Thomas, Pogacar, Vinny, none of them would allow this to happen without a fight. The only ones that I can imagine would are perennial bridesmaids like Dumoulin, Porte (though he would probably crash fighting), Pinot, Roglic. Opportunities like this don’t come around often. Hopefully he will have a chance to redeem himself but my feeling says that he might never win a grand tour

Spot on.

8th= on the all time list of Grand Tour winners and has won 1 more than Pog, “perennial bridesmaid” is a bit harsh!

Roglic’s problem has always been not crashing- or at least that’s the way it’s always seemed to me. He seems to fight / race to his strengths, he just seems to crash a lot

I think for the semi engaged or casual cycling fan roglic will go down in history as one of the biggest nearly there riders of all time due to consistently missing the mark at the Tour

For the deeply obsessive and hardcore fans he’ll be viewed far more generously due to his strike rate at one day events, one week stage races, and grand tours that aren’t the tdf

He’s one of the most successful cyclists of any era when you look at his entire career but never managed to put together three weeks in July

Arguably his team car’s conservative tactics cost him his best chance at a win in 2020. In its entirety he likely would’ve won that race with more aggression - but I don’t think that was knowable at the time

Roglic has had a great career. And remember, he joined the pro cycling ranks later that most others.

This is not a perfect ranking, but still shows how good he has been over his career:

This captures Stephen Roche vs Sean Kelly pretty accurately. When I was a kid, casual cycling fans would rank Roche above Kelly because Roche won the Tour. But Kelly had a much more impressive career.

Kelly was a VERY bad dude! Main reason I try and vpn to whatever gets me their coverage

Tremendous first day of the Dauphine. Didn’t have Vingegaard making a move on a flat on my bingo card.

Let me check mine…yeah, I did not have Jonas beating MVDP in a small group sprint either

Loved it :flexed_biceps:

I had forgotten his earlier career. You are correct. But the last few has been aweful

He’s won a grand tour each of the last two seasons…

I must be getting old. I could’ve sworn remco won the last Spana. And somehow I forgot about his recent giro.
Fine, I apologize for putting him in that sentence. My memory is letting me down.

First, I like Roglic quite a bit and was really hopeful he’d be the one to pull off a 2024Tour win.

But, despite Roglic’s wins at the Giro and Vuelta, here are what I see as reasons why people view him as less impressive (correctly or incorrectly):

  • his grand tour wins have been against lesser competition. When the true best of the best show up, Roglic does not win.
  • one of the first images I’ll always have in my mind of Roglic is his ride in the Tour uphill time trial where Pog took his first.
  • despite his wins, people cannot forget repeatedly crashing
  • His way of winning in the past has not been nearly as exciting to watch as the massive attacks Pog, Froome, Jonas have put on people that make them appear truly dominant in the last decade. Instead, quite a few of his victories have been boosted by attacks within the last 500m of stages to take a few seconds plus a time bonus.

Those are just a few of the things that come to mind, despite his palmares. And again, I don’t know that there is another rider out there I wanted to see perform in last years tour more than him

So does this mean Pog is washed for the Tour?

No.

Of course it does!

I’m interested to hear what happened - he faded pretty significantly to Jonas after the time check so I wonder if he’s sick or what else may have contributed.

Remco’s ride doesn’t surprise as when he’s had a relatively fresh run at a TT he’s clearly shown over the past few seasons he’s a cut above everyone else
